ParticipantI’ve had my Zanussi DW model ZSF4143 for about half a year now. No problems of any sort other than the detergent flap not popping properly (very likely my causing due to obstruction)
Anyway, today the machine started making a loud buzzing noise. Not continuous but similar to morse code. This happened for about 2-3 minutes and occured a few minutes before the rinse cycle started. I’m writing this now during the rinse cycle and it’s sounding normal again.

Solenoid for soap dispenser is a good bet – you say it’s been playing up already. It’s activated twice in the cycle, once to fire the flap and later on to dispense the rinse aid. It’s under warranty, so I’d send for service.

I don’t think it’s the soap dispencer.
The buzzing seems to last more than 10 minutes and only seems to occur before the rinse cycle.
It’s hard to describe but here goes. The buzzing stops when the water goes whoosh. i.e. buzz buzzzzzz buzz whoosh, buzz buzzzz buzz whoosh, etc
The noise appears to come from the back of the machine. It definately doesn’t sound like the front.
I’ll call in JL and get one to their eng around.

I have the same trouble with my zanussi DW. it is either the inlet valve or the soap dispencer valve – but doing the job allday, i havent botherd to check it out yet because the machine is still working ok.
On mine the buzzing happens for about 1 minuet at the start of the program.
Im going to have a look this weekend and if i remember i will post what i find.

I’ve had an eng around. He couldn’t find any problems. Nor could he reproduce the noise.
I believe I know what the noise could be. After doing some extreme googling, the noise could be caused by the detergent. Someone mentioned that certain detergents can cause strange noises and this is sometimes mentioned in the RTFM. Yup, my Zanussi manual mentions that a “whistling” noise can occur and is harmless.
I’ve been using a new liquid detergent this last 2 weeks. Coincidentally, we first noticed the noise the day after we started the new stuff. Not sure about the first day cos we weren’t close enough to hear. The noise has been constant everyday without fail.
The last few days I’ve been using my old Asda 5in1 stuff and surprisingly the noise hasn’t occured. Today I’ve returned to the liquid stuff and the noise reappears.
??????
I’m gonna experiment more…
Anyone had any expereience of this “noise”, its not a whistling noise either. It’s a sorta warbling electrical buzz (but louder)

Telling us what the detergents involved are would help……..
Multi function tablets generally generate (Ah, alliteration..) excessive amounts of froth and foam, which has different properties from water – strange things can happen.
We like the new Fairy Bursts – low froth and it cleans your crockery. You do need to keep the rinse aid topped up though.

did actually have look the weekend, but got nowhere, couldnt reproduce the noise!!
I think though its the inlet valve as it buzzes when the machine first starts up.October 28, 2006 at 9:48 am #192147cwl999

Unfortunately, the detergent is part of a consumer blind test. I believe it’s finish liquid gel due to the container shape and size and contours. Possibly a new blend. The stuff definately clean the tea stains off that normal finish 4in1 doesn’t.
The label only give usage instruction. There’s no real way to determine. I have to use salt and rinse-aid as per instr.
The detergent doesn’t produce any visible bubbles and is unscented.
The noise definately starts after the initial rinse and stops as soon as the main rinse occurs. i.e. noise only during the main wash cycle.October 28, 2006 at 9:42 pm #192148Trilobite

My mother and my gran had Zanussi dishwashers where the element was visible; and at certain points in the cycle, the heater element made a distinct buzzing. This was during the mid-1990’s, so might not apply to current Zanussi machines.

Was told something similar by the eng that visited. Something along the line of inline heaters don’t suffer the problem.
Anyway, yesterdays finish 4in1 on econ didn’t make any noises. Tonights gonna be the mysterious liquid again cos I’m doing a roast and that stuff cleans like magic.
Does anyone know what this “whistling” sound the manual goes on about is???

The whistling/warbling/buzzing sound might actually be the main wash-pump motor. A friend of mine has a tabletop Hotpoint (really a Bosch, in disguise), and it sometimes makes a similar sound; usually towards the end of the main wash, when the water is scalding hot.
It might be temperature related, in conjunction with motor vibration.

It’s usually the impellor on the wash pump aerating – a certain amount of air is inevitabley circulating with the wash water – as the soap solution is circulated and heated, the properties change from being a pure liquid to more of a foam, which has different characteristics. Effectively, more air is being sucked through the circulation pump. This can generate noise.

Yesterdays roast with this mysterious liquid and 65c normal wash didn’t produce any noises. Tonights gonna be the liquid on econ. I predict the noise will be there once the detergent is released and stops once the rinse cycle begins.
I s’pect we can’t go any further with this problem of mines.
Since the machine doesn’t make noises when using any other detergent and on normal wash, I can only think that damage is NOT happening. Since if damage was happening, the noise would be present on all detergents and all washes.
This liquid is GOOD stuff. Got plenty of the stuff. Better finish the damn bottles.

I would love to know how you came by the ‘trial detergent’. Did you participate in some localised consumer test? Or are you an employee of a detergent firm?
