I have just started to use my 18 month old dishwasher after 3 months of storage after moving house. It filled first time OK and started to cycle normally but then flood alarmed. I emptied the tray which was full of water, resetting the flood microswitch, and tried again. This time it filled, pumped around for about 5 seconds, stopped then single light alarmed after about 30s indicating a possible inlet problem. Took the side off having seen other reports of IWMS problems and tried again on another cycle. Empties OK, refills but water spurts out of 3 little holes on top of IWMS at normal inlet water pressure which is not that high. This is where the water is coming from creating the flood alarm I think….If I back off the inlet water isolating tap so that this does not happen, the m/c fills OK but will not cycle on after filling except the occasional single 5 seconds or so of pumping around. The softener regen unit looks pretty solid (dark brown) and there is only a little upward flow through it because of this, although it does prove that the solenoids are pobably working. Could this be the problem ? I have taken the IWMS out and flushed it through although I cannot see any blockage and water flows through it where you expect it to, but this has not made any difference. I don’t want to just replace the IWMS as it’s quite pricey if there is something else that may be wrong. When it fills there is no attempt to heat the water. Is it failing on something else before it gets a chance to heat up or might that be the problem.

Could you post up the PNC (product code) please as there are several versions of this model with various modifications, a few of the later one’s don’t have a IWMS as the previous versions did.

It does sound like a blockage though if the water is coming back out through the side chamber (air break).

thx for the reply. The PNC No. is 911888073 /01 which hopefully will mean something to you.

Water backs up along all three of the air break outlets at slightly different rates. I have taken the IWMS off twice and blown all of the passages through. You can see water travelling along all of them so if it is blocked it is not obvious. Is good water flow through the regen. block essential ?

Do you know what control sequence should happen after filling and how does the IWMS fault prevent this happening ?

Any pointers would be gratefully received…

OK, this version does have the IWMS that needs to be replaced to be honest.

You’ll be playing around with it forever otherwise.

Once done, it should be OK, if you need confirmation, then please ask an engineer to check for you.

    Re: Zanussi DE6850 Fill/Cycle Problems

I have persevered with the old IWMS and after lot’s of pressure flushing, the softener regeneration unit (that’s the large compartment full of minute probably dirty brown resin beads in the centre of the IWMS) now allows sufficient flow through it to balance pressures during filling and I do not get the overflowing from the air break that caused the original flood alarm. Put it all back together and apart from forgetting to put back the small bore plastic pipe connection to the (hidden from view) pressure switch at the front, all now works fine.

For those that attempt to clean out the IWMS for which you need to take it out, preferably somewhere you don’t mind getting wet! there are four water connections in all to re-connect. It’s easy to miss the fourth one as the small tube slips back from view into the depths of the dishwasher and you can’t get to it unless you take off the galvanised chassis closing strips at the bottom front.

Many thanks for your advice along the way. Cheers
