My Zanussi DE6850 has suddenly started using salt at an alarming rate and all of the dishes and the inside of the washer are covered in a cloudy deposit with rust forming on the metal items. I have tried changing the softener setting and it makes no difference and I have even turned off the salt setting again with no difference almost like something is stuck. Does anyone now what could be the problem please ?

Possibly a valve stuck open on the infamous IWMS unit? Very tricky one to diagnose. Time for pro help?

Almost certainly, the saltcap needs replacing.

I checked the cap and all seems OK and removed the IWMS yet again and checked the two solenoid valves. No blockages to report and the solenoids checked out electrically. I did however find the problem….. In curing a previous problem with the IWMS when the softener resin beads chamber had become solid/blocked after a period of storage, I had not realised that the 2 valves can be fitted either with the contacts at the top or at the bottom and their functions are changed when the block connector is fitted. It’s obvious now that the dishwasher was filling with salty water rather than it being used at the end of the cycle to backwash/regenerate the softener….doh!!…no wonder the cutlery went rusty overnight. I changed the valve orientation back and it has been perfect since….thx to all that replied
