ParticipantAs it says – I have a Zanussi fridge freezer and at irregular intervals it generates a howling noise. I have wondered if it could be a bearing wearing out or possibly gas/liquid being forced thru a small hole. Quite unnerving – been happening on an irregular basis for some time now.
Any thoughts chaps?

Does it happen when you open then close the door?

Hi – I’ll add the model number later. It does it randomly at any time day or night. It was majorly creeping me out until I worked out where it was coming from. Its quite loud too and scares the cat… 😛
It doesnt make any difference door open or not. The noise lasts about 3-4 seconds each time, it can do it up to 4 or 5 times in a 30 min period then not for ages. I guess it will explode eventually and I’ll know what was wrong by the blackened bit….cheers Marc

If it’s a frost free model it may well be the fan motor making the noise 🙂

Hi Dave
It is a Zanussi frost free fridge freezer – only model number I can see is ZFK56/52RF – it doesnt seem to mention what sort of coolant it uses.
Does this help?
What do you suggest to try to isolate the problem?Cheers Marc

Apart from the fan motor I can’t think of much else that would make a noise that loud to be honest.
Perhaps it’s time to ask an engineer to attend and check it out ?
Try the repairs@ link below 🙂

It sounds like refrigerant circulation noise, they are quite prone to it and theres no real cure. It can be worse when it’s just finished a defrost cycle.

KeymasterRe: Zanussi FF howling
The howling can be caused by the delivery tube being too long and protruding too far into the evaporator. Especially on R600a systems this can cause strange noises as the gas boils off. I’ve tried regassing, without success I’m afraid. The delivery tube flexs under pressure and squirts the side of the internal wall of the evaportor, instead of a clean “boil” there is turbulance created, hence the noise.
So is the compressor running as this noise occurs?
There’s no cure, it’s an error at assembly of the evaporator which was probably not at the time of appliance assembly. If under guarantee contact your supplier.
Hope that helps
Kevin

Does this model have the defrost drain tube with the end like a whoopee cushion above the compressor water tray? Have had one suck in air which made a groaning noise as it cooled.

Thanks for your advice chaps. I’m not sure if I’ll do anything as it works perfectly apart from the noise.
cheers Marc
