My Zanussi is really roaring loudly when it spins. The thing is it has been like this for a few years, and I am only now thinking about doing the job. My question is whether there could be worse damage to that part of the machine due to the bearings having been bad for so long. Is it possible that there is also water damage which would mean other parts are damaged near the bearings?

Also, since I am opening it up and the machine is a good 8 years old should I be replacing other parts just in case, such as the heating element? Is there anything else I might as well try while I’m at it?

I have been reading the washing machine manual, and Graham Dixon recommends buying quite a few tools such as hex keys, a socket set etc. Are all of these necessary for this job?? I will get a scket set from Halfords, but apart from that I don’t know what I’ll need.

This is a major job, even for a fully experienced engineer, if it has been noisy for a couple of years the chances are that it will be BER anyway. 🙁

Thanks, but you don’t say why that is. As I understand it the roaring noise is an issue with the bearings and they can be replaced.

Even a bearing change only on this machine is a major ( not an easy DIY ) job. If it has been noisy for as long as you say then it’s almost certain that the drum support shaft will be badly damaged and you may also need a drum rear half as opposed to just bearings.

Major job which has to be done in sequence, removing electrical connectors heaters/stats etc, removal of outer drum, splitting of the outer drum and removing inner drum shaft from bearings.
You can then see if the shaft is damaged assuming you are of a technical/mechanical nature and be able to recognise same etc.
Replace parts and do it all in reverse.
1hr-30min job for an experinced engineer.
First time with or without mechanical aptitude would be hard to say how long it would take, assuming you had no leaks etc on re assembly.

Thanks chaps. I have nothing to lose. I only got round to it now as I am moving soon and need to decide whether to take it with me.

The Washing Machine manual is a great book, and after reading it I am kind of looking forward to doing the job. As for whether I will recognise more serious damage, I doubt it, but I’ll have fun trying.
