ParticipantOur Zanussi FL1084 washing machine has developed problems at the end of the cycle (positions N and P). If you start it at program K, it fills, heats (to the lower temperature) and pumps out through all the intermediate ’notchy’ points past position L. When it gets to N, the water temperature keeps increasing (and would presumably go right up to the 90 deg limit of the second temperature sensor). If you manually step it on to P, the water pumps out, but the pump never stops and the timer never advances to the rest point after P.. (The pump motor does seem to run for quite a long time on the intermediate fill/heat/agitate/drain cycles, but does eventually advance).. The timer motor is running most of the time, but does stop now and again. What does the blue solenoid on the back of the timer do ? (It operates a plastic lever going in to the timer). It only seems to activate once early on in the K program. Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated

The solenoid on the back of the timer is the heating phase ‘holding’ solenoid. It prevents the timer from advancing until the thermostat has been activated (the water heater to temperature) deactivating the solenoid and allowing the timer to advance.

Hello Martin, Thanks for the reply about the solenoid. The funny thing is that the solenoid only ever seems to activate at the START of program K, and never beyond that. And yet the fact that the timer sticks at N seems to correlate with the ‘holding’ phase – wierd ! I should say thatI have replaced the 30/60 deg thermostat and the early phases seems to show that to be working (haven’t actually measured the water temp, but I hear the heater in action). I seem to have a load of conflicting symptoms – can’t help feeling that the problem is in the timer itself.

Or that the timer knob/selector dial has cracked and your unknowingly selecting the wrong programme? Remove knob and dial to check. 💡

Hi again, I’ve had the timer knob and dial off a few times , and there’s no damage there. Getting back to the holding solenoid, is this the ONLY way that timer advance can be delay (I had been monitoring the timer motor voltage, and I’m sure I saw it dissappear at one point. The solenoid lever seems very “loose”, so I just wonder whether it is the problem. Ever had the back off one of these timers (I think I know what you’ll say, but I’m desperate !!) ?

Nope, never. On the rare occasion they’ve failed I just replaced the whole unit. EMW Electronics used to recon them though so you may like to look HERE 😀

Hi Martin, Thanks very much for that link – at LOT less than the £160 for a new unit. I’m currently getting the timer out so that I can hopefully SEE what is going on with the advance – can’t do it until later this afternoon tho’ Thanks in the meantime for your help !
