ParticipantI have a Zanussi fridge freezer ZX57/3W and noticed that the fridge door was slightly ajar when I got home from work the other day.
The ‘Too Warm’ indicator was showing and has remained that way for the last couple of days. The fridge is no longer cooling at all.
The freezer is working fine and the compressor seems to be continually running. Switching the thermostat right down cuts the compressor off. There is no air flow from the Cool Air vent at the back of the fridge. Checked the fan in the freezer compartment and it is running. There is no excessive build up of ice visible behind the panel in the freezer.
The fridge isn’t making the usual gurgling and squeaking sounds – just the compressor humming noise.
Any suggestions? It’s 5 years old, surely not time for a new one yet!!
Thanks

I would suggest that because the door was left open the internal cooling parts have frozen up. If you defrost the whole think by leaving it off with the door open for 48 hours you may find that this clears your problem

Thanks. Fridge now switched off and defrosting even though it is ‘Frost Free’.
Another recuring problem with this model is that the water drain at the back of the freezer regulary freezes solid. This results in a sheet of ice building up across the bottom of the freezer and water leaking out of the door seal.
The same thing happens to a friends identical model.
Any idea why this should keep happening after the drain is defrosted?

Keep me in the loop on this one – I have suggested defrosting it first because as the door was left open excess moisture can be drawn into the compartment which subsequently freezes up. The standard frost-free is not designed to deal with such mass of moisture and will be overwhelmed. However, you mentioned that the drain hole can freeze up, this can either be a blocked drain hole or the defrost heater having failed. The latter can also cause freeze up problems.

Hi
The cause of the ice build up in the base is caused by a piece of black rubber that is basicly a non return valve which is just above the compressor drip tray,It goes soft and sticky causing the water not to run away and freeze in the drain.
If the door has been left open then this will cause an excess of frost on the evaperator,By defrosting it this will make it a clean restart and should cure the problem.
Whilst you have it defrosted remove it by pulling it off the small tube,The removal of this doesnt normally cause a problem as i have removed several without any problems.

Defrosting did the trick. Fridge working fine now.
Thanks for the advice.June 24, 2007 at 2:22 pm #218078Dales-Electronic

Good to hear all is well – keep an eye on that drain hole

Interesting… I just got a call from my mother-in-law as her new electrolux-zanussi fridge has developed the same problem.
I don’t have the model number to hand but will get all the details and post a new topic over the weekend.
What makes this a strange one is that she bought a new fridge last month as the last one (4 years old) developed an identical fault so we presumed it was broken. On top of that… this all started weeks after the flat was re-wired. I thought it may be linked to that but for one part of the fridge to be ok (the freezer) and the other to have a problem seems unlikely to be down to the electricity supply. But who knows…
