I’m wondering what the best course of action is here. I have a Zanussi FJS1597W washing machine and instead of draining it now just makes a peculiar whining noise – doesn’t spin either due to the water present. I don’t think it’s the drain hose as when I remove the filter, invert the plumbing connection under the sink and turn on the tap, water runs freely through and out the filter hole. Is it likely to be the pump? A new pump on the Zanussi site is listed at 24.99 which seems ok. Any advice on fitting would be gratefully received – is it a big job? I don’t actually mind paying an engineer but with the age of the machine I’m wondering if it’s got much more life in it anyhow. How long can we reasonably expect these machines to last?

You can get it here for a little less:

Basically pulls/wiggles out from underneath, providing you don’t mind the water going down your sleeve 😀 .

Providing the machine is still mechanically quiet (bearings mainly), it’s worth persisting with.

Power off if you are going to do this yourself.

the noise you hear could be a foreign object in the pump or the pump impellor could have came off.
not a big job but worth checking it before getting rid of it at worst you could be looking at the cost of a pump, rather than the cost of a machine engineers available at repairs@ link.
    plug out before checking.
