Zanussi TD4212W not getting as hot as expected

We’ve had this dryer for some time, and it’s been faultless. Recently, however, it hasn’t been getting as hot as it used to.

I’ve taken it to bits and checked the heater unit… this seems OK – both elements have the expected resistance values, and 230V is being switched to the elements at the appropriate time.

A power meter in the supply shows that it’s taking about 2.3kW on full heat, and 1.4kW on low heat, so I’m pretty confident that side of things is all OK. I’m wondering if the thermostat that monitors the running temp (rather than the safety cutout for the heaters) is faulty.

On full heat, the heaters are active for about 25 seconds and then off for about 1 minute 20 seconds. This averages around 400W… so well below the 3kWH specified to dry 5kg of cotton/linen.

I’ve only found references to two types of thermostat… one is the button type (two of these as the safety cutout for the heater unit)… the other is called a “mount thermostat”… what is this? I’ve seen reference to a thermostat near the door but haven’t investigated yet.

That’s the one you need to replace. It’s located in the front drum support cowling at the 12o’clock opposite the lint filter. Its part number is 1258406105 and you could probably get one by emailing spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk

Thanks – I’ve found the thermostat, but it’s not obvious how to remove it. I’ve taken off the control panel and can get to the rear of the thermostat and its connectors. I can see the button inside the drum, but no obvious retaining mechanism is visible on either side. Do I have to dismantle the dryer further to replace this part?

Oh – BTW I’ve figured out what a “mount thermostat” is… it’s the mount for the thermostat… still can’t figure out how to remove the assy tho.

Access from inside door. Remove flange then pull stat down…

Ok… I’ve now worked out how to remove the thermostat. Having a break gave me the renewed energy I needed to do it. Thanks for the pointer… now I just have to order the part, fit it, and hope it works!

I changed the thermostat, and the dryer is now back to normal.

However, the fault may not have been the thermostat. I found that a filter had been placed in the outlet hose when a kitchen redesign relocated our dryer. This was fairly choked with lint, and I removed it before testing the fix, so cannot tell which was the solution. I suspect it was the reduced airflow causing the safety cutout to cycle power to the heater.

Either way, the cost of the thermostat was less than a call out….

My drier is not heating up. I have tried to remove the thermostat as previously described but it is not coming out. I have removed the 2 retaining scres and the plastic retainer but the thermostat will not come out. Is there something else I need to do or is it just brute force.

I have exactly the same problem and cannot work out, for the life of me, how to remove the front door thermostat. I have removed the plastic cover, but I cannot get the stat out! do I remove the wires from inside the tumble dryer first? do I have to take the front panel off? Heelllppppp! Thanks
