ParticipantHi
My Zanussi ZDC 47200W doesn’t always start to rotate by itself. I need to load everything to the right hand side so that it has enough momentum to start rotating by itself. I can turn the drum by hand and once it does get going it’s fine. I’ve taken the top off and the belt appears fine, tight and in good condition.
Ive tried to follow a couple of online videos showing how to remove the back but even with all screws removed around the perimeter, the metal heater cover won’t come off. I’ve run a knife round the edge in case the rubber seal is sticking it, but it still won’t budge.
There is a small plastic fitting in the centre of the back which has an accumulation of very fine black powder in it. Any clue there?
Any advice on either of these issues would be appreciated.
Thank you.

ModeratorSounds like a failed motor capacitor, usually accessed from side panel not back.

ModeratorWould also need the PNC or product number to identify parts etc.

Thanks for that. It hums quietly when it’s trying to start turning. Serial Number is 13835750.

ModeratorProduct or PNC number will begin with 916******.
Some of these later Zanussi dryers have 3 phase motors not old style capacitor run motors so correct identification is essential.

ModeratorDone a little more digging, this machine does have a capacitor start motor, located behind the right hand ( from front ) side panel, screws down the back and one sneaky one up at the top/front. It’s a bog standard 8uf capacitor available in the forum shop here. https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/washing-machine-tumble-dryer-dishwasher-8uf-capacitor

Have found the Product No. 916 094 547 00
Does that confirm the capacitor is what I need?

ParticipantI’ve ordered the capacitor but am seeing comments online that I might have to discharge the existing capacitor before removing it.
How would I do that?

ModeratorTake no notice, that would only apply to a good capacitor on a machine that was still plugged in.

ParticipantHi folks. Just came back to say thanks again and I bought a new capacitor and fitted it and everything seems to be ok.
One reservation. The capacitor had a different end fixing to secure it to the plastic mount in the tumble drier so I attached the capacitor with cable ties instead. I don’t expect anyone to endorse that as good practice but does the capacitor body get hot in normal use?

ModeratorCable tie was one of the methods I used.;)

Brilliant! Was going to buy a new tumble drier but bought a new capacitor from U.K. white goods instead for £3.95.
Thanks again!
