We have an ancient, second-hand upright freezer that was working fine until 2 days ago (sorry, no idea of the model number). Since then it’s stopped making the usual Darth Vader-style noises & just clicks every so often, and has started to defrost.
Is it worth repairing, could it be something as simple as being in need of a defrost, or should we just get a new one?

    Sarah,
This is likely to be a compressor failure. The clicking noise will be the start relay coming on start the motor, which is not responding.

Likely to be expensive – one of the fridge lads should be able to tell you more; the model number would be useful for a more exact diagnosis.

I’d have to agree with Penguin’s prognosis on that one, compressor by the sound of it.

Generally a compressor change wil cost in the region of £200 all in, given it’s age, probably not worth repairing frankly.

    Dave.

Thanks for your replies – I’m now the happy owner of a brand new Beko zs430w freezer, which worked out a lot cheaper. Cheers. 🙂
