ParticipantWe have a Zanussi W1242W Washer Dryer which has served us very well for the past 12 or so years. It has now started to knock very loudly when on the spin cycle. I took the back off and turning it by hand I could see that the inner drum is spinning eccentrically in the outer shell and can be heard rubbing on the outer shell. There is also a few mm of horizontal play in the inner drum. I guess that this means that the bearings have finally worn out, so my questions are:
1. Is it worth, on a machine of this age, replacing the bearings? I understand that I would need an inner & outer bearing and a water seal for the drum, and from what I’ve seen a kit is likely to cost about £90-£100.
2. Would replacing the bearings be sufficient? If the inner drum is running off-center, is the shaft likely to be damaged as well? If that is the case. would the whole inner drum need to be replaced? I’ve seen an inner drum on eSpares at £165, but counting that and the cost of the bearings it looks like it wouldn’t be economical to repair it.
I’d appreciate any advice anyone can give on this.
Thanks,

£90 to £100 seems a bit steep !!
most likely spider failurehttps://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/5023996 … rum-spider
and bearing kit

double check with the shop before ordering as they will need you production code to check but it looks likely the above parts are correct

Hi Dave,
Many thanks for that info and the spare parts links, very useful indeed. I got the bearing kit price from a quick search on Google, but I was obviously looking at the wrong thing!
The parts you listed plus a drum seal, delivery and VAT comes to £85, so I guess it would be worth repairing at that cost. I’ll strip it down before deciding just in case there’s anything else amiss. The other half might have different ideas though, she’s been eyeing up a LG direct drive machine that seems to get good reviews.
Thanks,
Andrew -
