My Zanussi DCE5655 tabletop dishwasher has recently started leaving glassware very cloudy (I’m guessing this is limescale?). I’ve turned the water softener up to its maximum setting and refilled it with dishwasher salt but this doesn’t seem to have done anything. Is it likely that the water softener is not working or am I overlooking something? Any help would be welcome!

    Cheers,
    Chris

Just a thought but is the glassware definitely Dishwasher proof … its possible that the glass has just been washed to a point of no return …

Biggest effect can be the result of silica etching. This is a reaction caused by the water supply, and manifests itself to the glass, and will only affect certain glassware. No matter what you do, you will have a cloudy/milky effect.

Take an effected glass, run under a cold tap and hold up to daylight, you will probably find as long as the glass is wet, it looks crystal clear, and then the cloudiness appears as it dries. Chances are this will happen on expensive glasses, and one you had for free from a garage is perfectly o.k.

Thanks for your replies, but it turned out I was premature – I ran another load and noticed that the clouding washed off, so obviously not lime scale. A quick check confirmed that the rinse aid selector had come loose and had rotated to its highest dosage. I put it back to normal (the lowest) and it seems to be working fine again.

One quick question – Would you need less or more rinse aid in hard water? The manual states that the amount of rinse aid needed is dependant on the harness of the water, but surely by the time the water has got into the machine it’s been through the water softener so is already soft?

You will always get better results when in a hard / very hard water area and / or if you have a particularly full or dirty load by using rinse aid and salt .. despite what manufacturers of the detergent state … if you can get to a fishing tackle shop or a tropical fish shop then get yourself some water hardness testing strips just to confirm the hardness of your water to make sure you are using the correct dosage … also applies when dosing washing detergent …
