Zanussi WDJ1094 – trips electric-OK if element disconnected

Hi,

I’ve got an aging Zanussi WDJ1094 (I’ve replaced the bearings twice !), but now it trips the RCD whenever it starts. Fault finding a bit, I disconnected the live feed to the element, and all works fine (except the water won’t heat up obviously 😆 ).

Corroded heater element you might say – but the funny thing is that the impedance between the two terminals is still about 20 ohms, and the impedance to ground is about 1.6Mohms from both terminals !

Any ideas ?

did i really read that?

change the heater, ur not supposed to have any reading to ground!!!

Ask spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk for a 1240325-11/6 element and they’ll supply it for you pretty promptly. About £23 plus gubbins from memory.

Hi,

Not sure what you mean about reading to ground – 1.6 mega-ohms means that it’s basically open circuit (to ground) and the 20 ohms between the terminals is about what I’d expect for a heater element ?

No it doesn’t….it means the resistance reading to ground has dropped from infinity right down to 1.6 megs! (this probably drops even lower when the element heats up) and is certainly low enough for the trip to respond.

New element time.

Well – I have to take my hat off to you guys, again ! Full of scepticism (1.6Mohms to ground wouldn’t trip a 100mA RCD !) I bought a new element and removed the old one (this was actually much easier than I thought it would be).

Lo and behold, there was a part of the element that had been worn (presumably by the drum, possibly last time the bearings went !), and there was a tiny way through to the element. This must have been the fault, and reducing in impedance when on (as mentioned above).

I now have a fully functional washing machine again – will it ever die ?!
