    To anyone who can help,
Last week there was a horrible noise like masonry falling off the wall behind the washer dryer as we were using it.
Yesterday the dryer stopped working so I decided to have a peak inside.

On pulling out the washer, I could see what looked like dark brown grit falling out of the bottom of the machine. I took the top off the washer and could see what looked like brick/porcelain all broken and lying in the bottom of the washer. On investigation I could see that it was some form of casing on the rear of the washer drum that had broken and fallen off.

After clearing it out, I fiddled a bit with a small wheel and thin brown belt on top of washer which was a bit stiff. The belt was constantly coming off as I eventually managed to turn the small wheel.
Re-fitted the small belt and got it aligned so it didn’t come off all the time

Put all back together and after a few other teething problems washer and dryer now working fine.

    Questions:
    1. Will the fact that approx 1/3 to 1/2 off the brown casing has come off cause problems with washer/dryer.
    2. What may have caused this stuff to break off
    3. Could this casing coming off be causing too much vibration which may have caused the small brown belt to misalign and stop dryer working.
    4. Should I be considering buying a new washer/dryer. This one is approx 5 years old

    Cheers In Advance

One of the concrete weights has sheared off by the sounds of it. Probably the front one as usual. 😉

Alternatively the bearings could be shot, I can’t make my mind up based on the description.

TBH in either event it depends on how severe the damage is to decide whether to repair it or scrap it. 😕

Yes – the blocks add weight to help damp the motion of the drum.

    Age/vibration/loose fixings.

No – the motor bearing seize through a combination of moisture and low usage.

If the problem is purely the weight breaking, get it fixed, the block is cheap enough. If the tub is damaged (ie the weight fixings are broken, you might like to think about moving on. The tub half is expensive and a huge amount of work to fit.

Stay safe, power off as you investigate.

What sort of price would I be looking at to get the weight fixings sorted?

Sorry Penguin 45 wrong question (Thanks for the advice btw)

It looks like it’s just the weight that’s broken – approx how much to sort?

Weight is p/no 3794100-01/0, about £15 IIRC. spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will get you one, though Dave might not appreciate lugging it down to the Post Office!

An independent repairer will charge you for an hours time to fit it – rates vary widely across the country, so you should discuss that with your repairer whan making the appointment.

Three big screws to fit, but you’ll need to split the casing in half for access. Patience job more than anything.

are you talking about outer casing here coz after removing the top of the washing machine I could’nt see how you could remove the back or whole outer white casing?

Don’t mind having a go – got the patience of a saint

The back half of the cabinet can be removed using an 8mm 1/4″ drive socket. It is held on with 4 screws at the top edges under the lid, 2 or 3 screws along the bottom rear edge and 2 hidden ones along the bottom side edges. You need to prise off the plastic plugs to get at the latter ones. You also have to unclip the inlet valve bracket from the cabinet.

Have a look at it side on – you’ll see the join down the middle – back half unscrews quite easily.
