ParticipantGuys (and gals) – funny scraping noise on drum rotation noticed today on the washing machine. Thought originally something stuck behind the drum, but on removing the back I noticed bits of shredded plastic on the floor and the rest of what appears to be some kind of plastic wrapping, sticking out of the motor. It was clearly at some point inside the motor (probably) around some of the coils, but is now most definitely not in the motor ‘cos I had to pull it out!
So the exam question, how critical is this plastic wrap inside the motor ‘cos it ain’t there any more and I just hope this isn’t going to cause any problems? (It doesn’t look substantial enought to do any real electrical insulation)
Thoughts?

The winding of the armature is sheathed in plastic…… I would be very suspicious if you are finding bits of plastic – it implies that the armature has got very hot at some point. I would certainly check the condition of the brushes immediately; maybe even get the motor checked with a megger for earth leakage by your local repairer.
Oh, and empty the filter. If it’s choked, the spin sequence works rather like driving your car with the handbrake on.
Stay safe, power off before pulling the motor.

Cheers penguin
Will check the brushes & there’s no obvious evidence of melting on the plastic. (Filter is fine)
. . and don’t worry I’m a big fan of unplugging before touching the electrics!

Hi
I have this type of fault before,it turned out to be a plastic bag that had found it’s way under the machine then over a period of time found it’s way into the motor.

Thanks kladave – but in this case it is definitely the plastic wrap from within the motor.
