ParticipantOf late on spin it’s started to sound like the Tardis on take off .Almost as if the drum is unbalanced .My idea is that bearings are on way out .How difficult to change ? . Other idea is to run it to death as TBH it doesen’t owe us anything. Changed the pump motor a couple of times, and cleaned out the fluff trap. It’s now ( in our estimate approx 13 years old) .

Martin ,thank you .We sort of thought that with play in drum ,and noise on full spin . Got a question on the new machine advice section on replacement ,but not sure of whether reply was “forget it” or “good bet” .

Is it really worth it . Nothing major has yet gone wrong. it’s been rumbling for a few years, so possibly the shaft is worn. That would possibly mean new drum . And these days ,I’m not up to doing it myself. So is the cost of labour /parts ( including possibly new drum/shaft) worth it . Mrs is really taken by the one you commented on in other forum ( LG ), but still trying to decipher your answer. Any idea of worst cost scenario . ( Parts/labour) .March 25, 2012 at 8:51 pm #372011admin

Hi
if its only starting to get a bit noisy then no damage should have been caused to the shaft. Its only the idiots who leave them till they collapse that required a major repair.
the bearings and seal are available as separate parts or you could have the full rear half replaced.

Thanks ,Bryan. Thing is that she’s set her heart on a new machine, but we;ve seen the difference in quality in a few years in the past.( We got one of the early Hotpoints ,which lasted. Daughter got a more up to date one on strength of how well mums had lasted, and paid the price). Problem is that the outer is now mottled ( anything white in this kitchen goes like that) ,and as it’s not nice to look at ,and it rumbles, she wants something new. Whether or not it’s collapsed , is debatable. It’s been noisy for some time. But I’d have to call someone in. Any idea ( just a suggestion) as to costs would be appreciated .

Today ,the rumble got a lot worse. So we decided that a repair might be throwing money away. I’ve seen the buying advice ,and looked at the silver version of the one which the site thinks is a decent machine(Bosch ,of course). I realise that a washer dryer is a compromise, but space is something we haven’t got.
Thanks for advice, but I’d suspect that the noise is an indication of problems to come. She has seen the Bosch ,and likes it. Hopefully , it’s another 10 + year love affair with her washer dryer .March 28, 2012 at 10:44 pm #372014dave_h

oh- and by registering we get two years n the guarantee. But then , son works for Dom & gen, so that’s perhaps a bit more saved .
