    Good evening all,

I have “inherited” an obscure problem, (at least to me!) relating to the top oven/grill operation.

Essentially, my customer asked me to investigate a fault with the above cookers’ grill, having had several bad experiences with either General & Domestic, or Electrolux “engineers!”

The reported faults are: the top oven/grill is taking far too long to reach, and maintain a hot temperature, along with the grill, and top oven light “going off” when reaching around 200 degrees celsius.

I visited, monitored, and confirmed the above faults earlier today.

The grill element was definitely suspect; the outer section clearly not getting as hot as required…

Upon reaching around 200 degrees, the cooker then “knocked off” the grill element and top oven lamp.

My customer then reported that the above was a recurrent fault, which she had tried to resolve through her extended warranty with Domestic & General.

It transpires that “engineers” have visited several times to rectify the above faults, without doing any testing, or replacing parts…

So, I was then informed that four such “engineers” had visited to rectify the above issues.

My customer was informed that her grill/top oven was getting too hot, that there was nothing wrong with the cooker, that she had an element fault, or that she had a thermostat fault!

The final visit from the above, told myn customer that there was nothing wrong with her oven, and that they had done all that they could!!

Hence, my customer’s frustration and upset etc…

As mentioned, (in this novel) I visited earlier today to assess the above, and found the outer grill element to be faulty. (very little heat produced) and the above then cutting out, having reached around 200 degrees.

Another twist in the tale then arose, when my customer then said that the aforementioned engineers had “left some spare parts with her.” These were found to be a new grill element, and a thermostat…

So, with her approval, I replaced the grill element, and monitored the above again… and yes, the grill cut out at said high temperature, along with the oven lamp, which is probably linked…

Prior to fitting the grill element, I tested it, and the two thermal cut outs either side of the heating element at the rear.

So, there appears to be an obscure problem… I wonder if the two TOC’s either side of the grill element, are TOC’s, and if one of them (the left hand side one, if viewing from the rear is faulty?) I’m sure it gave an OL reading on my multi meter, prior to a 0.3 Ohms reading when it “tripped.”

The other/right hand side TOC appears unrelated to the fault, giving decent 0.2 Ohms readings throughout.

Perhaps the “suspect” TOC is faulty/has become too sensitive, as once the cooker has cooled down, the grill, and oven light recover…

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

well looked at tech and there is no info on the fault

    but

look at parts list and 2 stats are listed under the same part location ident but have different temps. one is listed as violet the other as black

    Yes, I see.

Wondering if I should obtain and fit the violet/higher temp’ stat (225 degrees) as the black one is 180 degrees?

Perhaps the original is faulty, or activating at too low a temperature? I’m not sure, but I think the original is the violet…

Have you checked that the cooling fan is running?
If a TOC starts as OL when cold and then goes to 0.3Ohms when hot then it is probably the cut in stat for the cooling fan.
I would expect the stat that is cutting out the oven to start at 0.3Ohms and the go OL when hot.
It might also be worth checking if the cooling fan is wired through the selector switch as on some of their ovens it is meant to turn on as soon as the oven is turned on – I don’t now if that is definatley the case with this one so you would need to chase the wires to make sure.

Looking at the parts photos/descriptions on AEGs website it appears that both the stats that are mounted by ears are cut out but the one that is mounted by its own threaded stub is the cooling fan cut in.

    Thanks for your message Jem,

Yes, the cooling fan is fine, although I don’t know if it is wired through the selector switch or not.

Will need to return, and assess further.

Unfortunately, I’ve torn some knee ligaments playing cricket, so trying to prioritise, and rest the knee as much as possible.
