ParticipantHello!! I’m having a problem with my fridge.. the freezer is working fine but the fridge is almost at ambient temperature.
I have checked a few repair videos on Youtube but almost all suffered from a blocked vent from the freezer to fridge, mine is not like that, it has no vents.
Tests I’ve have done…
– When turning the thermostat on or off the compressor seems to respond by going on or off. (thermostat seems ok?)
– The compressor IS too hot to touch.
– One tube from the compressor is really hot the other is at almost ambient temperature (not sure if it’s supposed to be like this)So I’m confused.. the thermostat seems to be working and if the compressor was bad why does the freezer work and not the fridge??
THANKS!

Moderatorhave you checked the freezer temp?
in this system as far as i can make out gas goes to freezer first and only when it get to temp is there enough gas to move onto the fridge
from the numbers the unit was produced around 1997 or so

ParticipantThanks for the reply!
Yes it’s an old fridge! but the freezer is doing very well!
About the gas… that I don’t understand very well. I know that after the condenser it goes inside (bottom left corner) and another tube comes out into the filter dryer, then goes through small diameter tube into another tube that comes from freezer???? back into the compressor. That’s what I make out of it.

Moderatorthe freezer could be -10 and you would not really know. it needs to be -18 or below to be safe
if its not cold enough then thats your problem “old age” its then either a lack of gas or compressor failure

ParticipantYes it could be the age.. unfortunately I don’t really have a way to measure the temperate.. something I can say is that lately the fridge has been getting worse year after year and has become more noticeably every summer, it seems that this summer it really gave up.
I have a question though does the thermostat regulate both freezer and fridge or just fridge?
You say it could be compressor failure even though I can hear it working is that possible? the compressor output into the condenser coil is very hot! so it seems to work, no?
Just trying to learn something here!

Moderatorthe temp inside the fridge is used to control bot sides
as i said the gas goes to the freezer first. if it all get used in the freezer then there is none left to cool the fridge. as the freezer gets colder in normal circumstances then unused gas move onto the fridge and when that gets cold enough everthing switches off. It only switches back on when the cold wall of the fridge reaches +2 degrees
you may well find you compressor is never stopping wasting electric
