KeymasterHi
i have a 10yr old ZFK61 that has developed a disgusting cheesy smell, which I have identified as coming from within the door seal. I think this was caused when a milk container developed a leak and run down into the seal. Can these be sourced and replaced by a DIYer, or is it a professional job?
Also, about every wekk or so a huge ice block builds up at the back of the fridge, on the left side. What the hell is causing this to happen and again, can I sort it myself?
My postcode is EN2 (Enfield) so if I need to call someone in hopefully you can advise. If it isn’t worth the repair costs I may just invest the money in a new machine.
Cheers in advance

KeymasterHi steve
milk always causes that kind of stink Iwould try to clean it first a mild bleach or milton would probaly work as some models have gaskets foamed with the door liner if yours is fixed with screws its no problem to change as regards to the ice block it could be a thermostat fault the constant cut in temperture not high enough to allow proper defrost to take place have you had a thermostate change before problem ocurred or the insulation is wet or damaged behind ice block area

ps if door gasket is foamed in a replacement door is a arm and leg and cost more than your fridge is worthFebruary 14, 2005 at 11:18 pm #126114clivejameson

Hi Steve
The door seals can often be replaced, the way to check is to carefully ‘peel back’ the seal on one edge and look to see if there are screws that hold the door liner to the door…if there are then they can be unscrewed, releasing the door seal for replacement.
More worrying though is the iceball at the back of the fridge…I’ve seen many Zanussi’s with this problem which is caused by the small distance between the supply pipes for the ‘fridge evaporator and the back wall of the ‘fridge. Unfortunately this has caused the insulation to fail locally for which there is no economical or practical cure, however if you can live with the problem by manually defrosting when required then it will continue to cool ok until you buy a replacement which is really your only answer i’m afraid.Clive
