A Zanussi ZI 920/8 FF (type: B257726; prod. no: 925 771 670) built-in ‘fridge/freezer, acquired 2nd-hand with house, has recently developed a pulsing noise which appears to come from the ‘fridge section rather than the freezer; the noise can be heard most clearly by removing the two vegetable trays and placing the ear on the base of the ‘fridge section. The noise sounds like a continual “wuhrr wuhrr wuhrr wuhrr wuhrr wuhrr…”, can be heard with the door closed, and is not the noise heard when (for example) a freezer bag comes into contact with the fan in the highest compartment of the freezer section. The base frequency of the noise is low, perhaps 100Hz, and the repetition rate about 3 1/2 Hz. So far there is no apparent effect on functionality, but with friends coming to house-sit for a fortnight at the end of July, we are concerned that the ‘fridge/freezer may die during their occupancy. Any possible diagnoses (or even cures !), please ?

To help with the diagnosis, I have taken a 10-second sound recording, captured using an Olympus digital voice recorder placed inside the ‘fridge just in front of the vegetable trays. It is available at http://web-consultants.org.uk/sites/personal/Zanussi.mp3

Sounds like the defrost timer operating, if its doing it continuously it may be stuck. Sometimes turning it one nick with a flat blade screwdriver will solve the problem.
50213960-00/3 is the part number if its found to be faulty.

Very many thanks, Seamy, much appreciated. A question, though, if I may ? Where is the access point to the defrost timer for the flat-bladed screwdriver ? There is no obvious point of access either from the ‘fridge side or from the freezer. The front of the divider between the two looks as if it might be removable — there are three or so screws underneath — but I don’t want to meddle if this is the wrong place !

Sorry for not getn back till now, normally theres a hole in which you can get a screwdriver blade through, if not undo housing screw & turn it one click & it should be o.k.
POWER OFF FIRST OF COURSE 💡

No problem about the delay : the noise is unchanged and the ‘fridge/freezer is still working 🙂 I will go and have a look for the hole, but really would appreciate some advice as to where I should be looking for it ! Is it inside the ‘fridge, inside the freezer, or (perhaps) at the back of the entire unit ? This is a built-in ‘fridge/freezer, so the only straightforward access I have is to the front; I have no experience so far of trying to get to the back or to the sides …
