In January 2008, I purchased a Zanussi ZWC1300 washing machine. It developed a squeak, initially intermittent but it became a consistent problem and also got louder. It shrieks on spin, loud enough to be heard two rooms away.

After several engineer visits and replacement bearings, I got a replacement machine. It rapidly developed the same problem – loud shrieking on the spin cycle. I called the retailer, got another replacement.

It’s been less than a month and has developed the same problem.

The engineer finally diagnosed the fault – the drum is rubbing on the door seal. However, he can’t fix it. He thinks that Zanussi have changed the design of the door seal, so it’s now bigger, so replacing the seal wouldn’t help. This would also explain why three brand new machines have developed the exact same problem…

Right now, I’m incredibly frustrated with it all (huge understatement. Three new washers in less than a year?! I don’t know whether to rant or weep).

So, I have three questions for you guys:

    – can I do anything about the noise? I’m reassured that the machine is mechanically sound (it’s the auditory equivalent of having a machine that’s covered in scrapes and scratches but works fine). If this isn’t the case, please let me know.

    – I got the ZWC1300 because the gap for my washer is 590 mm wide. I cannot find another front loader that will fit in that gap. Do any of you know of one?

    – Failing that, can anybody give an opinion on top loaders? I don’t care if I have to wheel it out from under the worktop (850mm high) for use. I just want a means of getting my laundry clean.

Curious – I can find no Tech info to suggest that there is a problem with the door seal on these compact machines.

With regard to replacement, Candy do a compact (AQ100?) which seems adequate (Done a few blockages, that’s all to date).

Horizontal top loaders are an interesting proposition, but aren’t really designed to be moved. The Whirlpool one used to have a retractable undercarriage, but I don’t think the current one does. Bosch do a nice (immovable) one and there’s one from Indesit as well, which, given the state of Indesit electronics, I wouldn’t have given.

UKW member Don may be able to offer a better insight after the holiday period.

    Hi.

I am an Electrolux Serviceforce Tech & I had the exact same problem with the exact same machine 2 weeks ago which the customer said had made the noise from shortly after purchase but only reported it now as the noise had become unbearable & the manufacturers warranty was almost up. On that particular appliance it was the drum shaft rubbing on the bearing seal that was making the noise.

We don’t see these machines often but this may be a more common problem than I originally thought.

I’m so glad it’s not just me! I’m sure the local engineers think I’m neurotic. Were you able to fix it, or did they get a new machine? Is there anything I can do to confirm whether or not I have the same fault? I’m moderately technically competent and entirely happy to take things to pieces and peer at them.

    Thanks for the reply!

    Hi.

On this appliance the rear tub & drum were replaced. I obviously cannot advise you to do anything to your appliance as for one thing it will invalidate your warranty. You need to get your local Serviceforce to deal with it.
