    hi
how the f. i mean how can i possibly get the pulley screw undone on a zwd1471s machine? its a big T50 torx screw.
i think its probably had thread seal put on it aswell.it will not budge. i wonder if one of those impact drivers would do it.
has anyone used one for this purpose?

Not easy I agree. I have used impact drivers but I always heat the pulley with a blow lamp but be very careful not to get the plastic drum too hot.
A Torx T50 with a long wrench may do a better job than the impact driver but you will still need the heat.

thanks mate. but i`m a bit wary about putting a blow torch any where near the plastick tub. did you manage to do do it without melting any of the plastic?

I agree it`s not ideal but have done it a few times as there seems no other way. You just need to heat the pulley slowly and take care. Maybe someone else can suggest a better safer way.

I just use a normal rachet handle with a T50 socket. Put a big spanner in through the pulley at 3 o’clock position into the plastic slots at the back of the tub, to stop the pulley wheel moving.

Put the rachet at the 9 o’clock position and hit the end a few times hard with a heavy mallet, making sure you hold the socket in position as it’s easy to burr the bolt otherwise. Once the bolt has moved 20 degrees or so it will easily move the rest by hand.

Never used heat and have done hundreds of bearing changes like this. I think heat would be counterproductive as the bolt would heat up much quicker than the drum shaft, making removal a pain.

Heat works as it breaks the strength of the thread lock. Aluminium also expands at a greater rate than steel so this all helps in releasing the bolt. Just be careful.

    hi again
i managed to get the bolt off . that tip about the heat worked a treat! i didn`t use a blow torch my hot air gun seemed to do the trick.it did have threadlock on it.
bit of a sod to getthe the spider shaft out of the old bearings but managed it in the end . i am now a bit puzzled about the tub seal as it doesn`t seem like the ones listed for the model iv`e got . its just like a big blue elastic band with a groove in it. its about 5mm thick. is this going to be hard to find a replacement for?

still having trouble, the spider bolts came out easy and they`re all like new so i can re-use. only problem the spider still won`t seperate from the inner metal drum. the holes for the bollts in the metal drum have been pressed inward by the taper below the bolt heads . they protrude slightly into the threads on the spider stopping me from sliding it out of the lip on the drum. anyone got any ideas how i can get past this latest obstacle?

Hammer a large flat bladed screw driver between the spider casting and the drum lip and lever out.
Avoid doing this to the leg nearest the drum seam and be careful not to buckle the drum lip that runs close to the door seal as this never looks good when you get the thing spinning again.

Re: zanussi zwd1471s torx pulley screw removal

    hi again
i managed to get the old bearings out without to much trouble with a hammer and punch.
the recesses on the metal bearing receiver thing that is part of the outer drum half seem in good nick,eg. smooth shiny metalbut there is a space between where the inner and outer bearings sit which is corroded a .will thisprevent me from installing new bearings?from what i can tell the spiders shaft sits on the two bearings and doesn`t touch the rusted bits when it is spinning.. is this correct?
what is the channel /space between the inner and outer bearings for?
is it there to allow you to knock the old ones out?
any advice woul be much appreciated.

just two more questions (for now 🙂 ) – when i knocked these bearings out there were 2 bearings and a seal but the kit on ukw has two bearings and two seals, where does the other one go?
also do you think i could get away with re-using the original spider, it s not in bad nick, not particularly corroded but i thought i would just see if the old bearings would go back on it, the larger one will but the smaller one wont go on at all. could this be because the`ve gone out of shape with all the smacking with a hammer and punch? there is some light speckly rust on the shaft. i don`t think i damaged the shaft end because i used a peice of three by two and a lump hammer to knock it out of the old bearings, it was not easy to get out of the old bearings. it would be nice if i didn`t have to fork out for a new spider but if i have to i`ll have to!
