This machine I attended this morning got stiff drum, checked for clothing, etc and nothing to show for. It was very heavily scaled up and the condenser unit was blocked with fluff. The wash heater was heavily scaled up and covered in fluff.

Which leads me thinking the bearings failure due to badly scaled up and the amount of fluff wrapped around the shaft. The machine requires good cleaning out. It’s only 3 years old.

I attempted to remove the drum pulley while in situ but it was proving impossible without out breaking the plastic tub. The client agreed that I would replace the rear half tub, so the question I wanted to ask which way to remove the pulley screw out of the pulley? clockwise or anticlockwise? Just that I don’t want to find that I spent ten minutes “tightening” instead of unscrewing.

    Anticlockwise

Use a tool to ‘lock’ the pulley usings gaps in tub

Thanks A1engineer, I did try it earlier on but the plastic seems be prone to cracking as there are already some cracks.

What kind of tool to use? I used the handles of the pliers to plug in two gaps as it ‘locked’ the pulley. Does it take a lot of force?

I will have a look at Machine Mart to see if they have heavy duty socket for my super sized socket wrench.

The plan was originally to remove the pulley in order to inspect the bearings and take some measurements so I can order some bearings, but it looks like I will have to remove the rear half with the drum in place and undo it whilst holding the drum which I will have to do it anyway.

Use a big bar it is really tight but will move(with a huff and a puff)

If the question is more how to remove the bolt. Then the best way is with a chisel and a lump hammer give the bolt a good hit first. Do the same when tightening.

Would this tool be strong enough to remove the nut from the pulley?

WRT to hammer and chisel, do I use a flat chisel and hammer to bash it against the nut? Do I do this while the tub in the machine or take the tub out and place it on the floor?

Just that I have not quite mastered Zanussi bearing change yet. All I am doing is the rear half tub change, I had hoped it would be very simple just like the usual Hotpoint rear half tub change. I have to remove all the bits that are crammed inside the machine first then make note of it before I can wield a hammer and chisel!

Will try do this without worrying the owner of the machine.

Re: Zanussi zwd1480w – how to remove the drum pulley

Is this one of those with the countersunk allen key / Torx T40 socket bolt holding it on? It’s damned near impossible to get that bolt undone without some percussive accompaniment. I use a sharp centre punch (well actually it’s usually a bit blunt because I forgot to sharpen it from last time) and get the bolt to start moving by first putting a dent in the flange of it, then giving it a few whacks in the anti-clockwise direction. It’s stressful but it will move in the end. You may end up with a bolt that has a rather chewed head on it and have to lay out on a new bolt but ususally it’ll be good enough to re-use. You could also use a small drill to make the initial hole in the flange of the bolt. I’ve never tried a heavy duty wrench like the one you’re thinking of but the difficulty with that will be getting a good enough hold so it doesn’t slip.
Oh, by the way, I once took a Zanussi split tub apart expecting it to be a bearing job as the drum was completely seized and it turned out to be a stone or a screw or something of just that right size stuck between the drum and front. When I split the tub it just fell out on the floor to my surprise.

Re: Zanussi zwd1480w – how to remove the drum pulley

    Thanks guys,

I found an impact screwdriver with the allen hex on it. Maybe this would be a good start once I split the tub providing nothing is wedged in.

Just a question, how long would it take me to do the whole job from start to finish? I rarely do bearings/tub changes, so I am kinda out of practice, I do know from Hotpoint washer, it took me a good 3 hours but this was a very simple hotpoint washer like I said, I rarely do it.

But this job tomorrow is the one is a crammed in full of Zanussi washer dryer with hardly any space to move.

This task has been discussed a few times in this forum. I did a quick search but so far could only find this one which is mostly about how to get the top springs released http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/forumsphpbb3/trade-technical/best-way-get-into-zanussi-tub-middle-split-body-panel-t53151-15.html?hilit=split{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}20cabinet{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}20bearing
Reading it will probably just give you nightmares though 😆 .

Job done! Glad to see the back of it!

Impact screw works very well. And I simply slided the tub out of the machine without having the machine on it front on the floor. So thanks guys for the advice, really appreciate it.

It was proving impossible to whack the drum out of the tub and in the end it got bent due to excessive brute force (don’t know if it was my fault or just dodgy drum shaft). I had to go out and purchase a new drum, really peeved. Wondering if it was poor metal fatigue. I admit in hindsight I could have used the pulley to bash the drum out which I didn’t do but still a lesson learnt! Would that be the correct way to do it to use the pulley to keep in place, unscrew a little then bash it then unscrew then bash and so on until it dropped off? Should I have done it differently? Looking back, I can’t see how would that work as there’s no room for the pulley to go inside, the screw itself would be pushing the drum out. Is there a specialist tool for it?

Sliding the tub back into the machine proved to be more of a challenge due to the uneven weight, solved it with a large block of wood underneath the drum to support it then hoist the spring onto the latch. It broke the bicycle cable I used to hoist it up and that was the heavy duty type!

All in all, it worked out well in the end despite the difficulties.

Re: Zanussi zwd1480w – how to remove the drum pulley

I take a spare bolt along (think it’s a Hpt spider bolt) and screw that into the end of the shaft so the bolt head gets damaged, not the shaft.
If the bearings were as badly shot as it sounds, then the inner race would probably be stuck on the shaft and you would have needed an angle grinder to cut it off, so you missed some fun there.
    Mike.
