ParticipantHi All,
My less-than-two-years-old Zanussi washer/dryer has developed some problems. Yesterday it stopped in the middle of a drying cycle with an E20 error, having a read up a little on this forum I understood that this was likely a drain pump/filter issue. The filter was a bit grotty but essentially ok, and the prop on the pump seemed to move ok – it would do about a half turn each way before resisting (which I assumed was normal given that it’s surrounded by electromagnets).
At this point I committed a blunder and tried to put another load of washing through on a full wash/dry cycle. It got as far as filling up with water, and presumably turning a few times (I was in the other room), before it just stopped and sat there, eventually obliging me with some beeping and an “err” warning. I turned it off and drained the water out, cleaned the filter again, put the clothes back in and tried just a rinse cycle – but the same thing happened again.
So, I drained it again, and started reading up a bit more, thinking “I may have to replace the pump”. However, I thought I’d try and narrow things down a bit further by trying just a drying cycle…and it turns out that that doesn’t now work either. When I put it on a dryer cycle setting and press go the “dry” light comes on (as opposed to the “wash” light”), it makes a noise like it’s doing something, does one half turn and then stops, after a few seconds the “dry” light goes out and the “wash” light comes on, but the “time remaining” indicator is down to 1 minute. After a minute it beeps triumphantly and thinks it’s done its thing.
So to summarise: it doesn’t drain on a wash cycle, and it does one half turn on a dry cycle before stopping and switching itself back to a wash cycle. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

E20 on the dry cycle can be down to the condensor (under the dryer fan back right corner) becoming blocked however if the wash side is now not working then select drain and start it now press and hold in both the start/pause button and the button to the left of it until an engineers error code is displayed and post what it is back on here.

Thanks Captain! I get an e23, am I right in thinking this also points to a pump fault?

With power off to appliance, disconnect wires (noting their positions) from dryer heating element, insulate them so they are safe.
Try on a wash programme & see if it works o.k or not, dryer heater earth faults are very common & throw up erroneous faults.E23 means that there is a faulty triac on the PCB, this can sometimes come up if the pump has went out on T.O.C or is open circuit, but as explained above this not be the correct code because of earth fault on dryer heater.

At the risk of outing myself as a novice white goods engineer, how do I identify the dryer heating element?

most dryer heaters a situated in a box on top of the machine under the lid
you should see the element tails sticking out of the box most times at the backDave
