ParticipantHi all,
Back around April 2008 I reported here that I’d picked up a one year old Zanussi washing machine (Freecycle) because it had been written off by the owners insurance Co because of failed drum bearings.
To replace the bearings I had to cut the sealed plastic drum in half and much to the surprise of some here (and myself I might add), I managed to join it back together again and it’s been fine ever since, till now that is.

We have just gone to use it (it’s probably used daily) and when you hit the start button, nothing happens (at all). No door lock, no water solenoid, nowt.
Holding Skip + Reset at power on sees all the LEDs cycling and pressing the Fabrics button once gives ‘E51’ on the display?
Now, a quick Google and search here seems to suggest a motor or control board fault so before I check for brushes (not been touched since 2008) etc I thought I’d better ask here.
All the best to all and for 2013. 😉
Cheers, T i m

And the same to you Tim. Though it seems 2013 hasn’t started too good for you pal. The motor has blown the triac on the main board. I’m guessing the drum leaked water into the motor, the motor then blew the board. Oh bother I hear you cry!

Hi Martin,
Hmm, FWIW and from a cursory glance underneath, it all looks pretty clean and dry? Not saying you aren’t right mind. 😉

I have an update though. I disconnected the motor and the machine then fired up ok?
I think I’ll take the motor out and give it a blow though with the compressor and check the brushes etc (unless you are 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} convinced it’s a bad board / motor)?
If it’s just the board, are the triacs obtainable / replaceable would you know please?(I’m an electronics sevice eng).

Looking at the first photo…..it looks as though a motor wire has shorted against the cabinet directly above the pump? There’s what appears to be black charred markings on the paintwork?

Hi again Martin,
I had a look closer at that area and I think it’s just carbon / dust etc.
So, I took the motor out and gave it a blow though with the compressor. I then gave it a check with my DMM between all of the motor terminals and ground and it all appeared open cct (not a full test I know).

I popped the motor back in and it’s now working again. 😉
I’ve left it open while I’m testing just so I can check for leaks etc but so far so good. 😉
I checked the brushes while I was there and they stuck out about 12mm?
Cheers, T i m
