ParticipantGot a minor nightmare here. Don’t know if anyone can help in any way.
Machine was dead, no lights, nothing. Story was it had happened during night and they came down in morning to find clothes still wet, drained but probably not spun.
Looked in filter and found a stick or two which might have obstructed impellor. Checked pump on flying lead, sounded fine.
Checked phase and neutral to board connection, working fine. Tried bridging lock, still no go. Opened up lock to check for short/burning -looked OK.
Brought board home for testing, found resistor 100R, 1W/2W judging by size, open circuit. Right on the edge of the board in line with the connector which takes power to the lock. R77 is the number. Replaced it and checked to see all nearby resistors, diodes and capacitors etc showing no signs of damage.
Return to customer feeling quietly confident. Re-install board and power up…..There was a slight fizzing sound reminiscent of a sparkler but as the 5th was five days ago, I thought not. Then came the burning smell and a light wisp of smoke. So I pulled the plug out.
My new resistor was burnt out. Also a nearby 8 pin DIL chip had exploded.
Wasn’t sure whether to feel sad that my repair had not worked or glad that I had not done that with a new board.
Anyway, checked everything, motor, heater, pump, even valves. All checked out fine. Blew into p/sw got two positive clicks.
So what is it with this lock?
Ive dismantled it and there’s only minor charring around the ptc, consistent with normal operation and it works fine on a flying lead. Even checked it through a plug in energy monitor and it acts normally.
Not sure what to do now.
Risk a new board plus lock?
Or tell them it’s BER?
Any thoughts, moral support, anything, whatever.
Mike.
PS It’s an EWM 1000 type board. The newer machines seem to have reverted to this design, which is a good thing I think.November 12, 2009 at 12:07 pm #303257phooey69

sounds like the board and door lock, had an engineer who always did both on those models, but it’s down to £ ?

Only other thing I can think of is a short in a loom somewhere.
Trouble is, they had already given me the go-ahead to get a new module. Guess I’ll order one plus lock and test it very carefully. Perhaps put a small fuse in line to lock.

Typical case of interlock blowing module here Mike I reckon.

Phew! Problem resolved. Rang him again. Explained that parts would be £128.31 plus an exceptionally reasonable labour charge and he baulked.
Had been the Mrs. who had agreed to the new board! Great. I’m free of that little cloud hanging over me!
