Zanussi ZWF16070W Lights and nothing except door interlock

Lights are on but when start is pressed you hear the door interlock click in but then nothing. When turning off the power after the usual delay the door lock disengages.

Was away at the time of the failure so only have the description from the wife.
Apparently, the machine made a noise as it scared the cat. However, she didn’t hear it (She was in the other room and is basically deaf).
Asked about smoke or smells but none reported.

Have pulled the machine out from its enclosure in the kitchen and immediately noticed black sooty substance on side of machine. Less so on the top.
On removing the top I once again noticed the soot. I asked again about any smells etc but none reported.

Any help toward further diagnostics would be appreciated. ie where to start or most likely cause from those familiar with this machine.

I have multimeter for testing if required.

try replacing the interlock failing that it could be the PCB
