ParticipantHi I have stripped the machine down, got old bearings out and new ones in. My problem comes putting the 2 halves of the outer tub together. When I screw them together, it clamps down on the inner steel drum to the extent it does not spin at all! I am sure both bearings went in to the point of being flush. It could be the shaft is not pushed through the bearings enough but you cannot see the front side of it to check and I can’t remember how far out the back of the tub the shaft originally protruded. I’m a bit wary of pushing down on the steel tub. Any ideas?

Sometimes getting them back in is as hard as getting them out … give it a crack from the centre to ensure it all the way down, this should give you the clearance when reseating

Where should I hit it? Inside the steel drum at the back?

No, you will need to remove the drum and check that you have fully seated the front bearing correctly. (That’s assuming you have fitted the correct bearings and seal kit?) The drum pulley should locate on the end of the drum shaft fully and the bolt should be tightened to ensure the shaft is secured in position before fitting the two halves of the tub together.

Fairly sure the front bearing is in as far as it goes. The seal is sitting on top of it and look flush which is what I guessed I was aiming for?
Why does the pulley need to go on before fitting the two halves? Will fitting it somehow pull the shaft further into the back half of the tub (eliminating my current non spinning situation!)

Yes, the only way to be sure the shaft is seated correctly is by fitting the pulley. It would be your obvious next move so I’m surprised you ask to be honest. 😀

OK attaching pulley sorted that issue and the machine is back together. Glad I didn’t hit it! My snag now is that the pulley bolt seems to get loose after a short period of spinning. Should I have replaced the bolt as well? I remember how tough it was to get out – I think due to Loctite. Shall I just get some Loctite and put it on the thread of the existing bolt? Thanks!

Loctite is the way forward. 😉

Yep – Loctite thread locker seems to be holding. FYI I found some in Halfords. All seems good but slightly paranoid about a slight noise on spin. The problem is I can’t remember what is sounded it like brand new 2 years ago. Possible stupid question – but do bearings “bed in?”

No the bearings don’t bed in. If a rumbling sound is heard as it accelerates then that indicates a possible minute amount of play between the ballrace and the drum shaft. Or that the bearing housing has a similar minute amount of movement. The latter less common, the former commonplace and a sure sign the shaft needs replacing. Any untoward noise is reason for concern and likely as not will only get worse…… 🙁

Thanks for all the advice. Given that pieces of the old bearings fell out I guess the shaft would have been jumping around a bit. This would tie up with the shaft wearing and the noise now. It looks like a shaft is part of the spider one of those is around £65. I may just see how long it goes for as the machine was less than £200 and I can’t face splitting it all again in the immediate future! Having your machine in a workshop outside is handy but you don’t hear the horrendous noises it must have been making to eat the old bearings.
