We have a Zanussi ZX97/5 Frost Free Fridge Freezer. Several times recently there has been problems where all three lamps (Door Alarm, Temperature Alarm, Fast Freeze Button Lamp) have all been flashing at the same time, accompanied by an intermittent (not very loud) audible alarm every few seconds. Pressing the warning lamps (as the book suggests) has no effect; the only way to clear the indications is to power down the unit for a few seconds and then switch back on again, after which the compressor starts up. The problem seems to disappear for a random period of time (sometimes hours, sometimes days) but we’ve had the problem several times in the past couple of weeks so it’s time to look deeper I think. Fridge & freezer cooling performance seems fine, however (the freezer temp was -20 degrees C this morning).

After searching this forum I’ve removed the two detachable panels inside the freezer compartment, exposing what appears to be some form of heater matrix(?), as well as several electrical connectors There is absolutely no ice/frost build up whatsoever. The fan inside the freezer compartment can also be heard (and felt) running.

For information, the part number is 928405222.

Any advice as to electrical checks I can carry out before calling in an engineer would be much appreciated. Whilst I work in the electronics industry I’m not familiar with white goods, so physical descriptions & location of any components to be checked would be very much appreciated. Many thanks.

    Brian.

ps I’ve just given the Condenser (behind the detachable front panel below the freezer compartment) a clean with the hoover (it was dusty, but I’m guessing not the cause of the problem?).

All lights flashing means that one of the NTC temperature sensors is failing. There are three, so you would have to work out which one is playing up. Intermittent nature of fault could suggest dodgy conectors or damp getting into the sensors.

Power off if you are going to investigate.

Thanks for the reply. Can you help with the following please:
    1. What does NTC stand for please?
    2. Where are sensors located, and how do I test them? I have a multimeter etc.

    Many thanks.

I had the same problem as polybear, but now my problem has gotten worse, the fridge part of the fridge_freezer has stopped working. does this help to narrow down what the problem may be.

Polybear, did you manage to sort the problem, any advice for me?

    Hi,
The problem cured itself, I’m glad to say. Your message has reminded me to sort some extra warranty, just in case. I’d be interested to know how you get on though.

    Brian.
