Model ZX79/5SIHi all – Help needed please.
Before i go out and buy the expensive GE Procond Electronica PCB. I want to make sure i have done all i can to find the problem.
We have had our Frost Free fridge freezer for the last 4 years. Problems have only started in the last 3 weeks, when we noticed that the fridge was to cool enough, and then a day later at +20oC!. At this time all the lights on the display were flashing and making the bleep bleep sounds.
The freezer has Never developed any problems. On the last two occasions i had unpluged the F/F and let it defrost for about 24Hrs before use. This only allowed the F/F to function correctly for about 10-12 days before the problem re-appeared.
So, their is something definately wrong. I can see the build up of ice in the evaporator section (in-between the freezer and fridge compartments through the plastic grill cover).
I suspect the defrost timer is not working! the defrost heater is a simple peice of item and i can not see this begin faualty.
I have seen a post that also suggest looking at the air duct that sits on-top of the compressor which might become block and restrict air flow to the fridge. The only blockage that may occur would be ice as when fully defrost for 24Hrs the problem goes away for 10 or so days.
How can i get into the evaprator section and manually defrost the ice. I have been told their are two screws that i need to take out, but which ones and where are they located.
Thanks in advance

It could be faulty evaporator thermistor… If it is, I would advice you get an engineer to change it as it is a devil of a job to replace yourself.

We have exactly the same problem, we can go about 10 days before the fridge is “warm” again and we have to do a full defrost.
Have you managed to fix the problem?

Yes,
I believe its fixed as i have not had to defrost it for about 3 weeks.
The problem is with the evaporator thermistor. I found the problem after banging my head against the F/F for about 2 weeks. It cost about £20 for a new part, but you might want to get a expert to fit it in.
I had 3 F/F engineers that came to the house to fault find the problem. But none were any good, they tried to sell me a new compressor (£200+ for the work), a new F/F one ever said their was an internal gas leak.it only takes less then 20 minutes to change over the part so do not expect to pay more than £60 in total for the work.
I hope this helps

Glad to hear you’ve hopefully fixed your problem.
Checking your product number we seem to have the same fridge freezer.
We’ve just a done a defrost again and are on day 1 of being “cold” in the fridge again 😀
Where abouts is the part that needs replacing, how do we get to it? And do you have a part number for it? Sorry I am assuming you have replaced this yourself.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I wouldn’t call-out to a customer, supply and fit that part for £60 (including VAT.) What do you do for a living? I fix refrigeration appliances and resent being told what I should charge.

Well done on finding the fault… :rolls:

MKR are you able to assist with where to find the thermistor in the fridge so we can replace it? Thanks

ParticipantIt’s attached to the evaporator assembly in the Freezer section…. But beware, this is not an easy repair!

Well, we still have this fridge freezer un-repaired – which I defrost on a weekly basis.
I am now at the point of buying a new one unless someone could tell me how much it will cost to fix it.
Unfortunately the only people I can get to fix it have quoted me a £60 call out plus vat to establish the fault and then £20 – £35 labour plus parts plus vat to fix it.
I don’t mind paying for the repair if i know in advance how much – it could be cheaper to buy a new one.
Has anyone had their Zanussi repaired and if so how much did it cost?
Thanks

😯 good call mkr
how long has it been where a customer has to tell US how much we should charge them for fitting a part?
i mean, the van, phone, car tax, fuel, insurance, advertising costs, vat, income tax, training, experience , etc cost nothing !!! not to mention the public liability insurance, which we have to have because the customer always seems to find a mark on the lino which ‘wasnt there before the engineer came’
yet its funny how kai managed to fix it, only havin been advised by others that it was the termistor (which , incidentally is NOT that easy to change, and there are other mitigating factors which will affect the working of the appliance)
i mean come on, he started by saying he was gonna buy a pcb, then asked where the screws were… then bangs on after he’d been advised by an expert as to how easy it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
honestly that post should be deleted or edited – it will cause offencesorry – had to have my say, i am, it has to be said, greatly insulted
grrrr

OK, perhaps your post is inappropriate for a public forum, but, lets just consider what the Public Forums offer. We will offer you guidance advice and support and try and keep you safe. We will not tell you how to repair your appliance. That’s our job. We are professional, trained repairers and we offer this service as a courtesy. Those who can take on board the tips and hints combined with your own ability will succeed. Those who can’t need to seek our professional help and pay for the service.
What the public posters can cook up between themselves is up to them. The sites policy dictates that providing the information is safe it will not be deleted. This information may well exceed what the professionals are prepared to supply, but we choose not to interfere with the public record.
