We’ve been having cooling problems with our fridge for months now, which is only rectified by totalling defrosting the unit – it’s then fine for about a week.

Whilst hoovering out the dust yesterday we noticed a pipe was frozen at the rear bottom of the freezer, however this pipe had a sort of heater coil around it. So we tried to warm the pipe by blowing hot air at it with the hairdryer and guess what – the fridge went down from 19 degrees to 8 degrees, so we are guessing that this pipe might be the fault.

My husbands quite good at electronics and wondered if he made some sort of heater coil to go round this pipe, if it would work and if so what defrost time should he use? What I mean is for how long and what time interval should the heater warm the pipe?

This is a shot in the dark, but we’ll try anything.

    Any help would be appreciated.

nope. dont do it, its not a heater coil as such – its the capilliary, and is an integral part of the system

if theres ice on the suction line, and the capilliary isnt warm enuff, its more than likely a system problem

never introduce heat to a refrigeration system when its running, its designed to absorb heat remember!!

    Thanks for your reply.

I think buying a new one is the answer.

I’m looking at a Whirlpool and Beko – normal old fashioned variety – without frost free 😆

Any advice as to which is likely to be the most trouble free in the future.

    Thanks.
