Hiya
I think I solved the problem!
Turned out the float in the water metering tank was stuck. Scraped off some scale from the sides and top and after POWER OFF bent the metal float switch lever up 2 mm whilst holding it firm with pliers. Now works OK.
The fizzing was a bit of water getting on electrics but I switched off and left it to dry – turned on few hours later and the fizzing had gone. I think the machine was flooding and although there isn’t a ‘flood container’ on these older machines some mechanism must have an emergency overide to stop flooding? The water on the electrics must have come from that as it’s not happening now?
I put most of the machine’s probs down to scale – i.e. this, plus a recurrently blocking metering tank-sump hose and burned out water inlet valve.alban

Thanks for that – more intellectually satisfying! Have checked the other things but presumably the ‘no continuity in the coil’ is the killer diagnostic or am I mistaken?

I’ll take that as a ‘Yes, it’s the inlet valve’ then! OK thanks for that and safety advice.
