Thinking more about the air bubbles and the associated noise, could it be that the air bubbles are introduced by the water softener during the first few seconds of filling and are therefore to be considered normal, that the real problem has nothing to do with this noise and instead is isolated to whatever is interrupting the filling sequence every five seconds?

Thank you Dave, shutting off the inlet valve while the program is running was a good idea!
    I observed the following:

-Recap: The water flows into the machine with 5 second intervals, turning off for 5 seconds, turning back on for 5 seconds and so on making a strange noise. Once the machine is filled up, the evacuation pump empties the machine and the process repeats itself. When discovering the problem a few weeks ago the process stopped after the machine had been emptied, with the error for inlet water remaining flashing, but now it just loops around and starts the intermittent filling again.

-Turning off the water tap (located immediately upstream from dishwasher inlet water hose/safety valve) during the 5 second “on” interval makes the noise stop immediately.

-Leaving the the water supply tap off for a few cycles making the noise go away, I noticed that the safety valve solenoid clicks on and off with the same 5 second interval, so something is activating it (but the sump is still bone dry). Is it normal that the safety shutoff valve is operating in synchrony with the common inlet valve during normal operations or should it only be activated during a fault?

    – The noise in the video is a bit misleading since it sounds more tinny than in reality. What it sounds like in real life is water and air being pushed though a small orifice.

    – To gain more clues I put a battery operated LED light and a camera phone inside the machine to better document what is happening. The film depicts air bubbles and water entering from the pump area. I have no idea where the air may come from… The house water contains no air bubbles. The high pressure pump does not seem to be running.

Any ideas or input is highly appreciated!

Another few clues to the mystery :
The dishwasher is installed in a Swedish summer cottage. It worked great last summer but was disconnected and moved to a heated bathroom over the winter to avoid being subjected to freezing temperatures. After being reinstalled this spring and the problem occurred, I noticed that the sump had been slightly dented during the move. Since the water supply hose runs in the tight space between the sump and the main pump assembly I suspected it being squeezed and therefore reducing the flow of water. The noise in the videos sound more harsh than in reality due to AGC (automatic gain control) of the microphone. In reality the sound is very similar to high pressure water running through a squeezed hose. Straightening the sump and relocating the hose in its correct position however did not cure the problem.

Thanks for your comment and advice Dave.
The issue occurs during the initial water filling séquence and I do not think the main wash pump is rundning during that sequence, or?
Here is a link to another video of the same issue.

Above is a link to a film clip capturing the strange noise while filling with water. The sound in the video sounds sharper than in reality but hopefully someone will still be able to recognize it and let me know what the problem may be.
