    Yes, that was it! Thank you. And thank you to everyone who posted elsewhere advice on how to proceed with this type of repair. In due course i’ll post how i went about the job. Well within the capability of any competent DIYer, -but remember to disconnect from the electric supply!

    Have removed the brushes and there’s only about half an inch left, so i’ve ordered replacements, from off this site.
