Yup. *laughs* you really should see the damage I did to the back wall… quite impressive for a tiny chick with a big knife! (knuckles are all healed up now too!)

Ya see… in uni they make us dissect stuff all the time.. but never show us how to put anything back together. 🙂 Now you know why I need a new machine. 😆

..because I was foolhardy and impulsive. (traits I received from my father) So basically, once I’d ruled out our 2 year warranty, I took the thing to pieces… and then performed my own brand of constructive rearranging.. 😳

It was only after, that my inlaws informed me there should be a 5 year, made for purpose guarantee,… which I probably voided by messing around with stuff.

Yeah… lesson learned: Never let a zoologist near your appliances. :rolls:

Unless… they just send you new parts without asking if you’ve dissected it… they don’t, do they?

    Quick Update

Thanks for all your help with my wayward machine, alas it’s finally kicked it. I managed to reduce the scraping noise and after all the war wounds received during battle I was happy enough to leave it at that… but in the process I found lint in the heating coils… black charred lint. Which makes me happy I decided to take it all apart in the first place. I’d rather mess a few things up and realize my dryer was liable to set the house on fire than do nothing and have the house burn down!

Oh well! Time to scrap this one and buy a new one. I’m only going to be living in the UK another couple years so I don’t need one to last forever so I’m thinking of getting the BEKO DRVS62W with a 2 year warranty. (just don’t want to burn the house down)

Anybody aware of any scrapyards or the like that buy/take old machines for parts? Hate to add to a landfill when 80{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the machine is pristine and works.

Re: Hotpoint VTD20G dryer – scraping noise

Remember those wonderful times (like 30 minutes ago) when I’d convinced myself it was merely the bearing and not the drum?

Well after removing the bearing I was rewarded with this horrible view: Gash. That is an actual slice that’s been worn through the metal by the drum. ARGH!

So here we go again… 🙁 how expensive is this going to get? am I better off scraping the machine and getting a new one?

Thanks Petal!! I actually managed to figure that one out a little bit before you posted! I was definitely excited. Heh

Btw, the dryer has drawn first blood! *grins* I’ll keep you updated on the war!

Re: Hotpoint VTD20G dryer – scraping noise

So.. it hasn’t beat me yet! *laughs* every day I learn a little bit more about this dryer o’mine.

Decided to take it ALL apart today. No more messing around with this half hearted stuff. It seems to make sense now. I’ve got the drum back into the little white supports and the felt is all snug where it should be… alas.. I’ve also located the inside of the rear bearing. It waggles all over the place! No matter how tight it gets screwed in this is definitely where the drum tilting is coming from. So I guess this means I need a new bearing.

I just wanted to check before I got anything. Everything else seems okay so I don’t think I need the whole kit… probably just the rear bearing pieces. (Of course… even if when I get the new bearing, I don’t know how to detach the the current one. Is there some special tool that I obviously don’t have or just something obvious that I’m not understanding.

So.. if I’m on the right track here, where exactly do I go to order the new bearing piece?

Thanks for all your help guys!

Re: Hotpoint VTD20G dryer – scraping noise

Okay guys, I offically hate my dryer. With a passion. The noises are louder and the drum seems to be slipping backwards, at one point it stopped rotating altogether until I yanked it forwards. sheesh!

I’ve investigated the rear bearing (I know it’s likely the drum – but better to check the easily replaced stuff rather than jump straight into an expensive call out charge right?)

Rear Bearing. Okaaaaaayyyy… Found it easy enough, looked a few up online, but I have no idea how to remove it. Doesn’t look like any earth fastenings that I’m familiar with, let alone decide whether it’s worn down and needs replacing or not. (Here’s a picture of it, Rear bearing, Bearing again maybe someone can enlighten me! :))

I know that if I pull the drum forward from the inside the bearing moves, like a screw that isn’t screwed in tight enough, but that brings us back to the alien-type fastening… how DO you make it tighter?

Re: Hotpoint VTD20G dryer – scraping noise

Thanks for all the info guys. We took it apart anyway. LOL Curiosity killed the cat and all that. Just like you said. I couldn’t fix a single thing. 😳

I can definitely see what you’re talking about, the drum is definitely scraping the back wall… problem is the fan is directly behind the scraping place. So if you dent the wall out so the drum doesn’t scrape, then suddenly the fan on the other side scrapes. *sigh* You’d think they’d have thought about this BEFORE they manufactured it. :rolls:

I’m curious though, how come it didn’t make the scraping noise for the first 2 years? It does look like the drum is setting a bit further back than it should. If you push it together the felt lining disappears, but as soon as you let up on the pressure it becomes visible again. I’m thinking this is what’s causing the massive lint build up inside the walls instead of in the lint trap where it should be.

So really… two more general questions I guess 🙂

    1. How much does a drum normally run?
    2. Petalpop – rear bearing? What’s the rear bearing? (I did have the whole thing apart in pieces so if you can describe it I’m pretty sure I’ll recognize it)
