Re: Drum noise on spin –

    Hi George

I just bought a Bosch washing machine two weeks ago, model number WAE24364GB – which could be the one you were recommended – note the E, instead of the Z. It is listed on Bosch’s website.

The good things – I’m really pleased with how clean it can get things, and with less powder too. It is fairly quiet during the wash and rinse phases of the wash cycle. It even looks nice, for a washing machine, it has a curved front that makes it seem less obtrusive than my previous box shaped machine. It has rubbery feet to help stabilise it, and so far it seems to be very solid on spin. The controls are clear and easy to use.

However I do have 2 issues with it (which may not be issues for you).

The first issue is rinsing. If you don’t already know that modern machines are not good at rinsing, then check out this article:

One of the reasons I chose this Bosch is that it has an aqua plus button, meaning more rinsing. However even with this button pressed, it still doesn’t rinse as well as my old washing machine. My old Zanussi used to do 5 rinses, and the new Bosch does 2 as standard, and 3 if you press the aqua plus button. Before I bought the machine, I didn’t know how MANY rinses it would do, I just hoped that having aqua plus would mean it would do enough! I didn’t really think about whether it was the number of rinses that was important, or the amount of water used per rinse. Now I think the number of rinses is important, since I’ve noticed that the Bosch’s delicates cycle does take in quite a lot of water per rinse, but the end result still isn’t that great. I’m still in the process of getting used to the machine, and one thing I’ve already noticed is that I can get away with using approx 1/3 of the powder I used to use; since it washes so well, it can still get the washing clean with this small amount. This of course helps with the rinsing as well. This Bosch also has a 15 minute quickwash that can be used as an extra rinse cycle (3 rinses) – it even suggests this in the user manual.

I just noticed that the ISE machine can do 5 rinses… so if you’re trying to choose between the Bosch and the ISE, it looks like the ISE may be better on the rinsing front.

My final comments on rinsing – it is possible that your old Hoover will be better at rinsing than even the ISE – you’d have to ask the ISE people exactly how good at rinsing their machine is – and if that is the case, you may want to repair your Hoover, instead of getting a new machine.

The second issue with the Bosch is the noise that it makes on spin, which is a high pitched whistling or squealing noise, and personally I really don’t like it. You can hear an approximation of the noise in this video (this is not my video, or my machine, but it makes more or less the same noise). And yes, I was surprised too that people make videos of their washing machines!

I don’t know if this is unique to Bosch, or whether all modern machines sound like this. I have read that it is due to the motors having brushes, instead of working through induction.

Anyway I hope this extra information is helpful to you, if you haven’t already chosen your new machine! If you choose one of the ISE machines, it would be interesting to know what they sound like, and how well they rinse.

    Casey
