I found filing / sanding the brushes rather hit and miss. It is difficult to get the correct shape so that the majority of the brush surface is in contact with the commutator. So I cut a strip of wet n dry, poked it into the motor on top of the commutator with the rough side up. Then inserted a brush and pushed / pulled the wet n dry paper across it. This sanded the brush to near enough the perfect shape. I then repeated the process on the other side with the other brush.
After refitting the motor I did an empty load spin and it now does 2 spin cycles of 2 or 3 minutes each. So far so good. I then tried it with a large load of wet washing and it also completed. Yippeeee perseverance is the key! Orientation 1 was correct as the motor didn’t blow up

Its not particularly noisy and definitely no screeching. I was trying it on the lowest spin speed 600. The armature is not scored.
Both brushes are fitted the correct way round. Having examined the new brushes after testing I noticed the angle of the bevel on the new brushes is slightly different to that of the old. Also only 1/2 the brush thickness is shiny so it appears the brush does not have a good contact. I will file it to get the same angle and try again.
Also one of the brush holders had a lug that was sticking out. This was preventing the brush moving freely in the holder. I have bent the lug in and will try with that.
The resistance readings in my first post were taken after stripping the motor and cleaning the case, armature, windings etc. There is no evidence of overheating / burning / insulation melting. However, when removing the outer windings square block from the rear case I failed to make note of its orientation (expecting it to fit into the connectors one way only). It can fit in 2 ways.
Connection orientation 1 – Windings block serial number on the same side as the rear case serial numbers. When viewed from the rear with the wiring plug connector pointing up, the windings block serial is on the left.
Pins 1 and 2 = 1.3 ohm
Pins 1 and 3 = 1.2 ohm

Pins 2 and 3 = 1.2 ohmHence my question in my original post if there should be a circuit between pins 1,2 and 1,3. There is a wire that goes to pin 1 on the motor connection so it would seem strange if this was not connected to anything (as per orientation 2). But I seek confirmation before I put the motor back together and test it.
