    In the end I found a solution. First remove the two screws of the rear triangular plastic plate that reveals the electrical connections. Inside there are two screws that secure the top plastic cover to the lower plastic cover. It is not necessary to dismantle the handle. Then while the water filling cover is in the up position, use a plastic ruler to lever off the top of the water filling cover.

    Once it is off you will see a screw that secures the bottom plate which can then come free. If one of the clips of the water filling cover breaks you will need to stick it back on with epoxy glue. The thermostat dial can be lifted off by hand.

    I hope that someone will find this information useful.

    Nowadays it seems that manufacturers make it very difficult to service steam irons. You usually have to break them to open them. Maybe this is for safety reasons or to increase sales.
