Update: Service tech came out today. Pressed the same buttons, got the same code. Checked solenoids (didn’t listen to me describe the symptoms) and pronounced them OK. Fiddled around a while and said “oh dear”.
Verdict: main power board stuffed. Possibly $350 to $400 to fix/replace with no guarantee that there isn’t something else likely to pack in.
Supplementary info: major chain store having a 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} off sale and F&P offering a loyalty bonus to F&P owners who buy another one.
Action: Buy a new machine with more features and a 2 year warranty for less than double the repair cost.
Thanks for lending an ear.
Anyone in Perth want a dead washing machine? Or I might salvage the pumps and solenoids for my all-grain brewing rig!

I called F&P today and they reckon that the code means “50” (I must be failing binary maths). And they confirm – hot water solenoid circuit fault. I wish it was as simple as replacing the solenoid (which I’ve done before for a different fault – cheap fix).
As Penguin45 wrote, the power supply to the solenoid is constant whenever power is applied to the machine. Disconnecting the leads to the solenoid also shuts it off. So it looks like a fried circuit in the “dumb” part of the electronics. A triac? Possibly. Quite a disturbing fault if you think about it – just pop the valve open and keep on filling.
What I don’t get is that all of the other mechanical functions are dead – or is that some sort of shut-down reaction to the fault by the “smart” parts?
F&P’s technician will come and see it tomorrow – doesn’t look like it’s going to be cheap though.
Thanks for the help.
