ParticipantRe: Whirlpool FF still giving problems
Hi people, my Whirlpool Fridge Freezer is still working better than ever.
I think I should point out that my ice maker is the later version with the internal electronics and a GREEN flashing light.

Hi everybody,
firstly I want to say that without this site I would have got know where with repairing my Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer. Please go to the beginning and follow my thread to get the history of my problem with this appliance. This site was instrumental in bringing me into contact with ‘Brodders Baldrick’ who has worked tirelessly to help me get this appliance working as it should do – John, for the record you are a true wizard and in my opinion a very switched on cookie. My Fridge Freezer is now fully working for the first time since 2008 and yes the ice maker IS now fully working.
Once brodders had sorted the problem with the back control box and the fridge and the freezer was functioning correctly he suggested that I remove the ice maker and send it to him. Brodders then checked over the ice maker and found a fault which he repaired and mailed the ice maker back to me. I fitted it and it works perfectly. I believe that the part Brodders fitted cost pennies where as the Whirlpool ‘Engineer'(and I use this term loosely) quoted me £300 for a new ice maker just before he wrote my freezer off and cancelled my insurance with Dom & Gen.
I now have a Whirlpool American fridge Freezer that works as it should, ice maker and all.
I can’t thank Brodders enough for what he has done to help me and I feel that I MUST tell everyone on this site what an amazing guy he is.
If you are having a problem with a Whirlpool Fridge Freezer I would strongly advise you to get in contact with Brodders Baldrick, he is helpful to talk to, very skilled and his costs are very realistic. He can be found on e-bay and I believe he is still around on this site also.My personal e-mail address is > groundrushed@yahoo.co.uk < if anyone would like to contact me. I will also help you to link up with Brodders Baldrick.

Update on my last.
I had previously carried out a ‘continuity of circuit test’ on the heater eleiment and so new it was intact.
I have been blessed with having made contact with a really nice, patient and knowledgeable guy who goes by the handle ‘Broddersbaldrick’ he has been helping me along through a process of elimination(see e-bay).
1st – on his advice I fitted a kit of relays and capacitors to the back control box – this did not appear to have any visable effect on function of FF – but I do believe this action eradicated any suspect items on the Back Control Box, meaning that the next stage could be moved onto knowing that the relays and caps were good.
2nd – on the symptoms persisting and on advice of BB, I purchased a new ‘Defrost Sensor’ at a price of £97(ouch). I did a manual defrost delved into the back of the freezer section removing all I needed to access this part. I fitted the new part, put everything back and fired up the BEAST as I now call it. The BEAST went mad – freezing not only the freezer compartment but the fridge compartment too – including cartons of orange juice frozen like a brick. After running like this for about 3 weeks the fridge area started to warm up again – BU99ER it – £97 spent, all that work and 3 weeks later back to square one.
I had no choice but to carry out a further ‘Manual Defrost’. having done this I fired the BEAST up yet again. This time I installed 2 fridge thermometers(1 in each compartment). the freezer froze down to -18 as showing on the front LED panel. The fridge chilled down to +6 as showing on the front LED panel – to my suprise and amazement the internal thermometers also read the same temps. I have observed the temps of the fridge and freezer compartment every day for the past 3 weeks and all appears STABLE —–WOW.NO freezing of the fridge area and so far NO warming up of the fridge area.
I can’t explain or understand why but there we have it.I now hope to tackle the ice maker that has not worked for over 2 years.
I only hope that in doing this I don’t upset the gains I have made with the fridge freezer function.
I take my hat off to ‘Broddersbaldrick’ thanks again John.David Ross(Nottingham)

hi, can I refer you to e-bay where you should look up Whirlpool fridge freezer parts and try to track down a guy who uses the name ‘broddersbaldrick’ – he is a cracking bloke – sounds like he knows his stuff and is helping me at the moment to sort my WP/FF.

hi, can I suggest that you get 2 x cheapo fridge thermometers from somewhere like Wilko’s and put one in each compartment to check temp. Then progress from there.
I am not an engineer but have relpied because I see that you had no responses, I think if you do the above you have a start point.
Also post make of fridge freezer and how old it is if you can – there are some very knowledgable and helpful people on this site.Creamytash

ParticipantRe: Fridge not cold and freezer too cold
Hi, I am having similar probs with a whirlpool – similar but not same.
When my fridge freezer starts up after a manual defrost the freezer goes mad and feezes like urs to -24 ish the fan that blows the cold from the freezer into the fridge works fine but blows too much cold into fridge and freezes stuff in there too —- until after a couple of weeks when the ice builds up again on the evaporator preventing the fan blown air passing over it to cool before being blown into the fridge compartment thus the fridge then starts to warm up.
Daft question form a none engineer – 1) are your fan blades fitted the right way round so as to move/push the air in the right direction – or alternatively 2)is the fan motor running/rotating in the right direction to send the cold air along the ducting to the fridge.
Sorry – I am not a fridge engineer – just a guy struggling with his own set of fridge freezer problems – I fear I might even be talking Bo110cks.

Thanks for the reply, sorry I have been off line for a few days.
You are correct I neglected to say that during previous investigations I removed the heater eliment and carried out a test to confirm continuity of circuit using a meter, lathough I have since been advised that I could have run 240v through it to test if it heats up. I am not an electrical engineer and did not like the sound of doing that however I am now questioning if I should futher test the eliment.
I am receipt of some support and advice from ‘Brodders’ but I have been slow in acting on suggestions due to work pressure and working hours.
I realy do appreciate ANY suggestions or guidence. I am also happy to pay a sensible rate to any local engineer who can sort it for me but I won’t go to Whirlpool.I have vowed however, that if I can’t get the beast to run as it should I will take a chain saw to it and put the video on U tube and e-mail a copy to Whirlpool – I am really disgusted with them.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!
Hi everybody,
I posted on here last Christmas with a problem that I am still living with and which I hope to now be able to get to the bottom of and address once and for all with a little help from some knowledgeable people on the forum.
My FF is a Whirlpool FRSS 36AF20/2 model No. 858619015012.
1)The ice maker does not recieve any water to make ice.
2)I have to carry out a manual defrost because I get a gradual increase in temp within the FRIDGE compartment, while at the same time I get a build up of frost/ice on the back wall of the FREEZER compartment.Following the manual defrost and me mopping out the plastic tray underneath the unit, the temps are reset and the fridge and freezer runs ok for about 3 weeks – then the whole process starts again.
I have checked that the fan above the condenser is operating ok.
I have removed, checked and refitted the defrost heater eliment which is ok.
I previously had a new ‘back control board fitted in in Sept 09 by Whirlpool – just before they wrote off my fridge freezer and canceled my cover policy with D&G.I am not an engineer of these appliances but hope to sort it out with a bit of help.
I am now looking at supecting the ‘Auto Defrost System’ and possibly the ‘Motorised Baffle’/Air Diffuser’.
My probem is that I don’t know how to eliminate one or the other. In the back of the freezer compartment behind the back plate I can see that the heater eliment shaped around the condenser, plugs into a small black box above the fan – is that a thermostat or type of control unit that operates the defrost eliment, should look at changing this?? – what is it called as I can’t find it in any parts list on websites as they also don’t show a picture of it.
I would like to solve the auto defrost problem first and get the appliance keeping food chilled/frozen. The I propose to try and tackle the ice maker problem later.
Thank you for chewing through all of this,
Any help will be gratefully received.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool 20RU D4A fridge freezing problems
Hi, I have experienced this with my Whirlpool FRSS36AF20/2A+ 858619015012. which is not quite 3 years old yet.
In Septeber 09 the freezer failed completely and I was told that I needed needed a new Back Control Box by WP engineer who returned a week later to fit one. The problem of liquids and veg in the bottom of the fridge becomming frozen did not return once the new back box was fitted – although I am not sure if they are relatedRecently the freezer alarm sounded off(week before Xmas -bu99er)and I could only keep the freezer to -18 by keep setting the fast freeze mode. Then after a day or so the fridge side started to get warm(+18). I was guessing really but I then switched the power off at the wall, removed all of the shelves and the inner back panel from the freezer. The evaporator(I think it is called – the bit with fins that freezes) was ice from bottom to top all the way up to the base of the little fan. I then tested the defrost heater element and the fan, which both showed to be working. Meanwhile the freezer defrosted as I mopped the water out of the tray underneath. The next day I built the thing back up again. It has resumed to work fine setting at Freezer -18 and fridge at +3. I now wait to see how long it will last as I suspect that the thermostat for the defrost element has failed and allowed the freezer unit to build pack ice – this preventing the fan from pushing chilled air through the ducting and into the fridge side.
X fingers but I have been running it like this from new years day with the Freezer at -18 and the fridge at +3. I have used a fridge thermometer to take the readings and not relied on the display of the front panel to tell me.
I am not a technition – far from it and I really don’t even know the names of the related parts properly so please cut me some slack as I need to use ‘baby words’ to understand the explanations.
I hope the above may be of some help to you.
