OK … so I rang round on Saturday to order a replacement programmer … one local company (squadmatic) said that they could get hold of one, but asked why I wanted one.
After explaining the fault, they thought it was the tacho generator coil – and said they could come out and have a look. After swapping the tacho generator coil with it making no difference, the programmer was removed and a replacement, refurbished one ordered. It was fitted tonight (Wednesday) and fixed the fault. Cost £95 all in – with a 6 month guarantee on the replacement programmer. Plus as it was done in the evening it meant I didn’t even have to take time off work 8)
So the fault’s fixed for less than I could buy a replacement programmer for 😀

checked … open circuit between case and all terminals on motor – so it looks like the timer/controller then !!
I’ll source & fit a replacement and report back with the results … thanks for the help 🙂

helo_75 … I’ve tried that … same result – there again I’d expect it as it does the same thing if you switch it off and on again part-way through the cycle (even on rinse or drying) – but thanks for the suggestion.
Penguin45 – pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by the armature being “down to earth”? thanks 8)
