Well the new motor arrived this morning (actually first delivered on Friday – quick work Bosch!) and fitted this evening. Hey presto working washer!!
Thinking how the washer ‘failed’ it seems to fit more and more that the annulus around the rotor was cracked before I took the motor apart. The motor was turning half a turn, then stopping. If the annulus magnet was cracked, the time the current switches its polarity on the second half of it’s turn it would stop. I think.
Thanks for suggesting turning the drum before dismantling, I could hear a very slight ticking – probably supports my theory above.
Anyway, time to find out who makes the motor and see if I can get a replacement magnet thing!

Thanks for the help so far, but I don’t think we’re done yet… 🙁
Well, I managed to get the motor off and inspect the brushes and they are about 2 inches long – so that’s not the problem!
However, I didn’t quite understand how to get the brushes out at first, and ended up dismantling the whole motor. It came apart fine but in re-assembling it, I broke the carbon collar that fits on the base of the rotor just next to the bearing. 😳
Well, a new motor is on order from Bosch (£115 delivered!!) so we’ll see if that solves the problem. Maybe the collar was already cracked and it actually fell apart when I was fiddling (or maybe I’m telling myself that to make me feel better!).
I don’t suppose anyone knows where I can get a replacement carbon collar for the motor from? Might be able to return the new motor if I can fix the old one.

Thanks for the prompt response!
The drum does turn on wash, but will only ‘kick’ around a couple of times then wait for about 10 seconds before doing it again, in a very similar fashion to when it’s trying to spin in fact.
I’m afraid I don’t know what normal behaviour during the wash part of the cycle is!
Do you know where I can get the part number for the bushes? It might be worth replacing them anyway, the washer is just over 2 years old with prob 4 cycles a week during that time. How long do bushes normally last?
