Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Thanks for the pointer, Kwatt,

The fridge is fine, and the vent works fine. On further investigation I think its probably loss of refrigerant. I’ve removed the ducting from the freezer, and had a look at the cooling element. After 30 minutes running the bottom part is -10c changing to about 3c at the top. Thus its producing enough chilled air to keep the fridge cool, but not enough for the freezer to get below -2. At least that is my guess…

Given its now 10 years old, I think its reached the end of its useful life.

Anyone any views on this as a replacement? I’m not inclined to spend £1500 again, so I though I’d try cheap and cheerful..

    Ho Hum, More troubles:(

    Whirlpool S20B RSS31 fridge/freezer..

The fridge is fine, 2c, the freezer isn’t, warmer than the fridge!

No problems with the electronics – no flashing lights or clicking and the water dispenser works as it should.

The boards have been replaced/repaired a couple of times.

Is it terminal, or is there something repairable?

    Thanks.

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

The symptoms sound identical to mine – a different model number.

I suspect the boards are similar, if so a repair kit from ebay is about a tenner, assuming you are able to use a soldering iron.

Brodderbaldrick sells a kit with comprehensive instructions.

The front and rear boards were replaced a few years ago, together with the icemaker. Since then, I’ve replaced the capacitors on the rear board, as guided here with the kit on sale here, which fixed the last batch of problems.

Is this the front board, and can it be repaired, or does it need replacement?

    Thanks.

Now fixed, required a replacement capacitor on the front board. Supplied, together with instructions by the ever helpful broddersbaldrick.

I had the usual clicking and flashing from the front panel, but fortunately no problems with actual cooling. If it wasn’t for this thread I would have been shelling out around £300 for two new boards.

Instead, it was just capacitors to replace. With hardly any soldering experience, I opted for the kit from broddersbaldrick (available on ebay) and sent the boards to him for repair.

His service was exceptional! Great communications, instructions and photos showing how to remove the boards, really quick turnaround (boards sent 4pm Tuesday, arrived back 12pm Thursday!), and a superb fix.

So thanks to UK Whitegoods for creating the forum, thanks to everyone who posted making it the top ranked page for a Google search on ‘Whirlpool fridge freezer clicking’ and very special thanks to broddersbaldrick for his contribution to the discussion and his excellent repair service!!

For anyone who’s just found their way here with the same problem….follow the advice you’ll find in this thread!

    Cheers,

    Chris.

Interesting, my S20B RSS31 degenerated in to a frenzy of flashing, clicking and random door open alarms. Still freezing, ice making and cooling properly, but horribly noisy.

Got the kit for the rear board, and fitted that, which cured most of the problems, except the flashing front panel. I can live with that, it is quiet!

That seems to indicate the front board needs fixing, but I think that is beyond me, given the lack of that neat kit for the front board.

Do you have a link, I can’t find a front card repair kit.

    Thanks.
