Well just to completely eliminate the possibility of it being iced up (‘cos that was all I could find on the net) we switched it off, emptied it, put a fan heater behind it and left it on (low) for 24 hours. Just at the end of that period we poked a long pipe cleaner thingy down it and pop! out came a plug of ice. All working ok now, but just shows how prone these things are to icing up and that can only be down to poor design in the first place. Anyway at least if it happens again we know what to do.
Hi and thanks for the response. We emptied it, unplugged it, and left it overnight to completely defrost so I don’t think it’s ice. There’s nothing to see from the bottom except a wire spring of some sort about 50mm up it (with a borescope) – maybe a clip onto the outlet pipe. I suspect there are at least two sharp bends or elbows in the pipe run that make it impossible to rod through. If nothing else occurs to me I’m tempted to make a couple of strategically placed holes in the insulation and see exactly what’s going on. Last resort!
HI again, just for info- I identified the fabric softener receptacle as the most likely cause of the problem, as it seems to be a very poor design. I discarded the blue plastic top and cut away the dividing wall between it and the adjacent chamber so that any water landing in the softener chamber flows immediately into its neighbour. We’ve just completed three full wash and rinse cycles without any leakage so I think I’m on the right track. No good for anyone who uses fabric softener of course but we do not. Anyway it will do as a workaround while we look for another machine. Cheers!
Hi. Well I inherited the machine with the “new” house three years ago, and the floor slopes towards the back so it’s only now I’ve come to relay the floor in the utility that the problem has become apparent. Lord knows where the water has been going all these years, trying not to worry about that….. Good (I think) to hear that it’s a well known problem, as my fabled talent for being able to fix anything under the sun was being called into question by SWMBO. Time for a new one then. Thanks very much for the advice, you’ve saved me even more futile head scratching and puzzlement. Cheers!
Well you were right Dave. It was the spigot on the sump that the hose connects to. About 20mm of white fat- couldn’t be seen from inside the machine- couldn’t be seen in the pipe!

Hi Dave, update on the problem, the regeneration vessel is filling too high and overflowing from the vent at the top. This appears to be because the primary outlet from the vessel is unable to take the flow.
If I take the cap off the salt container the vessel fills the cabinet via the regeneration outlet and salt container and all is well. No back-up, no problem, normal water level in the base of the cabinet. As it’s probably unlikely that the pipe from the primary outlet to the cabinet is blocked, is the most likely explanation that the softener has become blocked? Is this possible?
She’s never used salt in the washer as the water in Cheshire is quite soft and doesn’t need additional treatment. Cheers!
Not tried anything yet, but it’s been working well for some years so don’t think it can be tap/pressure
related. Have looked on the spares list and there’s a “water flow meter” just below the regeneration thingy, could it be that that has failed??

Hi Dave, thanks a lot for the info, the top came off as described (with a bit of encouragement as the holes in the frame were distorted) and then the side panel. I can now see the problem.
When first switched on the, water is pumping up through a large translucent plastic vessel on the side of the machine (one inlet, one outlet and one regeneration(?) connections) and is then shooting out of a hole in the top RH corner at some speed. The only way to stop it is by switching off the power.
I’ve no idea what this vessel does, but I’m guessing that there must be a cut-off valve that cuts off the supply to it when the appropriate level has been reached, and that this has failed.
Am I on the right lines and have you any suggestion for what might be causing this?

Update: Further investigation indicated that the new thermostat was faulty(!), so that went back. I’ve replaced the old one for now, but temperatures are still too high, although not such a wide variation as before for some reason. It does seem to be running for a long time now, so I’m beginning think that the compressor is getting tired, as suggested above. I understand that the insulation has a shelf life too? As it’s an old fridge by modern standards I’ve decided to scrap it and buy a new one. Shame really ‘cos it’s in excellent condition cosmetically, but fed up with messing about with it now. Beko BL21 seems to be a reasonable option for about £200 any views out there?
