Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Thank you both CookieMonster and Chezza for your thoughts on what might be wrong with my FF.

As soon as it started playing up I pulled out the vent and vacuumed there, I do this every once in a while so there was no great build up of dust/dirt, it made no difference.

It sounds like you both agree that it could be the cooling fan motor.

As it is such an old FF 1) Am I going to be able to get a replacement and 2) If they are still available, where would I get one from? and 3) Will I be able to fit it myself?

    Many thanks

Thank you, thank you. I did as you said.

Turned it off, turned it back on, fan does not start up….

Have not taken it out yet to sniff, however a couple of weeks ago I spent several hours trying to find the source of a hot plastic smell in the kitchen, I suspect my hot plastic smell is the same as your burnt out motor smell!

OK so I have a burnt out fan motor, where do I get a replacement? Also could I replace it myself, I have a tiny bit of DIY experience, but don’t fancy blowing myself up or breaking a nail…LOL.

Thanks again for your quick response.

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Hello, I am new to this site and have had a quick look through this thread, I can’t see the same problem I am experiencing, but please forgive me if I have missed it.

I have a very old FF (purchased in 2000) and up until now it has worked beautifully, and since reading this, I suppose I should feel very lucky! However last week I noticed that the central bar that both doors shut onto was getting very hot, so hot that the rubber seal on both fridge and freezer doors is getting hot also, hot enough for my young daughter to yelp when her arm touched it.
The next problem I noticed was when I got ice lollies out of the freezer, on the hottest weekend so far this year, only to find they were liquid. Initially I thought someone had not closed door properly, but now 2 days later the freezer is still not freezing. Fridge is working fine.
I have pulled out FF and there was some water on the floor.

The numbers I have got are
    ARG 488
    3XARG488G00

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance.
