    Thank you all. I shut it down for 48 hours, cleaned it thoroughly and threw out everything that had been in there a while. I checked behind the fridge – nothing obvious. There was some paint on the copper piece leading from the compressor and some water (odourless) in the evaporation tray, the light was also working fine and no rodents. After its reboot the smell has not returned. It is still a mystery (Kwatt, you are probably right though I know not what) and all seems well. Thanks again for all the input. Appreciated.

    Thank you for the link. I don’t think it is a food problem. It is clean and the problem arose after it was moved to decorate. The smell is at times overpowering and the concern remains. It was interesting that the article said that there aren’t any mechanical or gaseous components that smell as a general rule. Still at a loss.
