    😀 Thanks Dave, Martin,
I think I am on the way to resolving. I found an old drain hose in the garage and connected to the pump thus bypassing the “Air Block container” (thanks for the name and part number, Martin 🙂 .
With the machine on its side it was actually very easy to remove the latching lugs. Once that was done the Air Block container was easy to remove (machine upright again), and then the hoses. The hoses are easy to clean as my outside hose just fits inside. So now I just have to clean out the unit – loads of gunge.

I would still like to understand the purpose of this Air Block container.
Is it simply to stop any siphon effect with the little tube to the drum having a one way valve to let air in but not out? If so then I guess I don’t need it with the way my machine is plumbed in. I have the hose hooked into an upright drain which connects via U trap to the soil stack about 9 inches away. For siphonage the soil pipe would need to be full of liquid about 2.5 feet above ground level. My downstairs loo would have overflowed well before then and I would have a major insurance claim on my hands anyway!!

While the machine was on its side I did clean out the sump pipe and everything else I could get at – found a bra underwire in two bits – amazed that that had not caused problems.

Thanks electrofix. It is not a problem with my drains. I have the hose in a bucket beside the machine to eliminate that. I have tried to help the pump by sucking on the outlet hose with a wet vac. I have also tried blowing down this but it seems totally blocked.
The test you suggested – the hose does not expand at all.
    Any other ideas?
Especially how do I remove that plastic unit that the final section of drain hose connects to. It is some sort of plastic clip onto the sheet steel back but I don’t want to break it in my enthusiasm and ignorance.
