    Yes – it was a blocked pump in the end.

    Apparently it was detectable audibly – when starting, the unit should have gurgled as the pump kicked in to make sure it was drained before starting the next wash cycle.

    In my case… silence, then the water started whooshing in (please excuse the technical terms!).

    Once the pump had been cleared it was fine again – 15 minutes work for a chap who knew what he was doing and who had the tools.

    Ho hum, I was starting to get the sneaking suspicion that it might not be a DIY job. I did call Hotpoint about it – they seemed to think it was an engineer job too.
