Could be almost anything. Isn`t this a washer dryer? A couple of pointers I`ve had in the past. 1) nail / bra wire half way through the sump hose rubber is one strong possibility 2) leaking rubber air trap chamber where the glues gone bad 3) poor filter seal 4) rotted out heater box – not likely. 5) something to do with the inlet hose perhaps 6) stand pipe part blockage and machine leaks at the rear of the machine and the water creeps forward? 7) pin prick hole in s/steel tank – probably very rare. I`ve run out of other ideas. If you do get to the bottom of it let us know please.

Hello, I just wanted to thank everyone on this thread especially this reply above.

My 20 year old Miele W842 was suffering a leak which has been very hard to find. Randomly, some water would appear from under the front of the machine. It seemed to happen only when the machine had a heavy or full load. I changed the drain pump as the water was appearing around this area and I had heard the drain pump seals go bad. This did not fix the issue.

When the bottom kick plate trim was removed, if I layed on the floor I could see water shaking off the sump hose onto the floor during the spin cycle. The corrugations on the sump hose were all wet also.

I removed the sump hose complete with ball valve, etc and thoroughly inspected it all but it all looked fine. No holes of anything. The bottom middle of the drum area around where the sump hose joins onto the drum was getting very wet during spin also, as was the front bottom of the drum where the air trap and heater box are. I tried everything and was out of ideas. I spent a while thinking there was some problem with the seal between the drum and the sump hose. . .

I put talcum powder around all these areas and also put some talc around the detergent box connections and around the right angle pipe which is the main water inlet from the detergent box into the top of the drum. At this point I was thinking I had a problem with a hole in the drum and I was close to throwing in the towel and giving up thinking it was finished.

I noticed a tiny dribble of water run down from the top right angle pipe connection to the drum when the machine did it’s little 5 second spin at the end of the rinse.

I then watched the machine do a 1200 spin with a medium to heavy load and the water then started to come out this connection and run down the middle of the drum down to the bottom of the drum and onto the sump hose!!

The bottom middle of the drum area around where the sump hose joins onto the drum was getting wet as was the front bottom of the drum where the air trap and heater box are due to the sump hose shaking the water all over the place only.

I have recently changed the dampers to new Miele ones as I bought some cheap ones from amazon a few years back and the drum was clunking and dancing about due to the cheap amazon dampers.

I can only assume that the excessive movement of the drum with the bad dampers has caused the right angle pipe to become weak where it seals to the drum. Also, the heat cycling seems to have made this rubber pipe a bit hard.

Interestingly Miele changed the part from a right angled hose to a more normal hose possibly for this reason. Miele part numbers below. I hope this information helps. I will be buying a new hose from Miele tomorrow: [TABLE=”border: 0, cellpadding: 0, cellspacing: 0, width: 100″]
